The great Epic-It shines & soothes!
Sri Rama, the tormentor of enemies, surrounded by his ministers & brothers occupied the splendid golden throne. He then admirably looked at the two very handsome brothers (Kusa & Lava), addressed Laxman, Shatrughna & Bharata, saying-Listen to the story sung by both of them, portraying excellent sense & words
He then urged the singers with the lustre of demigods to commence. Both of them, with good & ample voice, chanted the kavya (poem) in a distinct meaningful way. Tuning their stringed instruments, they sang melodiously & engagingly. The chanting of the kavya in the assembly of men, comforted their sense of hearing & the listeners rejoiced in their mind, heart & the whole being
Addressing the assembly Rama said-Both Kusa & Lava, even though ascetics, are endowed with the attributes of royalty. Even though they are singers, they are ascetics. Listen to the meaningful story with concentration. Encouraged by the words of Rama, the two brothers chanted according to marga mode of singing (classical style). Even Sri Rama concentrated his mind on that chanting
The brothers started chanting about King Dasratha’s kingdom & the greatness of Ayodhya (city, which is unconquerable/invincible, cannot be subdued in war)
Formerly, this entire earth belonged to those victorious kings starting from Prajapati Manu. Among them a king named Sagara got the ocean dug & his sixty thousand sons surrounded him whenever he went to battle. It was from the family of mighty monarchs with Ikshvaku as its founder & other kings born in that race, the celebrated epic known as the 'Ramayanam' arose. I shall now propagate this Ramayanam, incorporating the merits of dharma, Artha and Kama & complete in all respects. It deserves to be heard right from the start without prejudice
On the banks of river Sarayu, a great & prosperous country named Kosala, which had abundant foodgrains & wealth & was inhabited by contended people, was situated. In this country was the famous capital city of Ayodhya built by the Lord of men-Manu. With well laid out thoroughfares, the beautiful & prosperous city of Ayodhya extended for twelve yojanas in length & three yojanas in breadth. It looked splendid with its well laid out & broad highway strewn with flowers and regularly sprinkled with water
King Dasartha, augmenting the prosperity of the great kingdom, lived in the city of Ayodhya like Indra lives in heaven. The city where all kinds of artificers lived had arched outer gateways, well-arranged local markets and all kinds of instruments & weapons. With matchless splendour, it abounded in eulogists and genealogists. It contained stately edifices decorated with flags and hundreds of sataghnis (missiles)
Ramayana gives us a glimpse of perfect rule-characterized by equality, moral authority, absence of crime, and prosperity for everyone
Where lies:
Justice
& Equality-equal rights for prince and pauper,
Moral
Governance-rule by pure moral authority (Dharma),
Peace
& Prosperity-universal happiness & abundance,
Welfare
of All-protection of nature, animals, and all living beings with focus on the
collective good &
Ethical
Living-Where society adheres to truth, compassion, and virtue, with no sin
even subconsciously
We all should strive to bring these elements in our area of influence. Let’s pick them one by one
