Real compassion!

Duryodhana who was hiding inside the lake, became very depressed hearing the bitter words from Yudhisthira, but since there was no alternative, he finally made up his mind to accept Yudhisthira’s challenge & fight. He said: I’m only one, whereas you Pandavas are many. Therefore, pls do not demand that I fight with all of you at once. Kindly allow me to combat you one at a time. In that way I will be able to kill all of you & thus repay the debt to the great warriors who died for my sake

Yudhisthira said: O Duryodhana. It is very commendable that you have accepted my challenge. Now you can choose whichever one of us you would like to fight with the choice of weapons will be yours. If you are able to kill any one of us Pandavas, you will be given back your kingdom. Otherwise, if we kill you, you will attain a heavenly destination

Duryodhana said: You have amply displayed your noble character by allowing me to fight against only one opponent. My choice of weapon is the mace & I am willing to fight with anyone who dares come before me on foot, armed with a similar weapon

Yudhisthira said: Very well! Come out now & be killed

Being unable to tolerate these words, Duryodhana became very agitated as he rose out of the water, carrying his mace. Indeed, the Kaurava king looked like a second Yamarāja because of his fierce demeanour & great effulgence. Still, all the Pāndava warriors joyfully grabbed each other’s hands, being at last able to see Duryodhana before them

While angrily biting his lip, Duryodhana said: O Yudhisthira, you’ll now suffer the consequences of your taunting words. My only request is that you pls remember that you had promised to fight with me in a single combat, not all of you together, for that would be extremely wicked

Yudhisthira said: Why you are talking like this? Have you already forgotten how Abhimanyu was killed? Where was your consideration of morality at that time? Now put on your armour & fight with any one of us you choose, for that was my solemn promise

Duryodhana put on his golden armour & crown & then challenged: I’m ready to fight with any one of you brothers, whomever you wish to select

At this time Sri Krsna chastised Yudhisthira very severely, saying: O King! You’ve acted very rashly & foolishly! What do you think would happen if you fought with Duryodhana, or for that matter even Arjun, Nakula or Sahadeva? Don’t you know that for 13 years Duryodhana practiced Fighting with his mace day & night with an iron statue of Bhima, just waiting for the day to come when he would be able to kill him? Only Bhima is competent to fight with Duryodhana with mace. Because Bhima is less practiced than Duryodhana, it is only out of foolish compassion that you have allowed another gambling match to take place. Bhima is certainly stronger than Duryodhana, but the Kaurava king possesses greater skill in wielding the mace

Compassion is certainly a good quality but acting foolishly in compassion is not at all recommended.

Also helping others on the bodily level is good but we also need to strive in parallel to infuse purity by appropriate spiritual processes. This will be more holistic help. We will provide the deprived not just outer resources but also inner resources such as spiritual insights & transformational practices that will empower them to become pure. Thus, we can do our part in ensuring that our help actually helps
