Divine Desire!
Bhisma next cited following conversation to Maharaj Yudhisthira, that took place long ago between Indra & Brihaspati
Brihaspati said: A king should never quarrel with his enemies, because quarrelling is for boys. One should never put an enemy on guard by showing anger, fear or joy. Externally, one should treat his enemies as if he has implicit faith in them. Then, when an enemy is off guard, he can easily be attacked and conquered
Indra enquired: Dear teacher, how can a wicked person be easily understood?
Brihaspati said: A wicked person is one who proclaims the faults of
another behind his back, who is envious of other’s achievements, and who
remains silent while others are being praised in his presence. Of course, mere
silence at such a time is not in itself a sign of wickedness, but an envious
person will be seen to breathe heavily, shake his head negatively, or bite his
lip. Another characteristic of a wicked person is that he does not fulfil his
promises, especially if not repeatedly reminded
After hearing from Brihaspati about so many aspects of duty & righteousness, Yudhisthira remarked: O Grandsire, the path of kingly duty is certainly long & many branched. Pls tell me what is the most important of all duties, the practice of which will earn one of the highest merits, both in this life & the next
Bhisma said: Worship of one’s mother, father & spiritual master is the most important of all duties. The commands of these 3 persons should be executed unhesitatingly. One should never see fault in them & one should never eat before they do, or eat food that is superior to theirs
Yudhisthira asked: By what means can one overcome all difficulties in life?
Bhisma replied: When one gives up all sinful activities by very strictly
following the principles of religion, he gradually overcomes all difficulties
in life. Better still, if one simply takes shelter of the Supreme Personality
of Godhead, Sri Krsna, who is now personally present, he at once very easily
steps over the head of life’s problems
Such important life lessons for
us all to ponder, reflect & imbibe in our actions
We should always pray to the
Supreme Lord that our desires and ambitions are always guided and guarded by
Dharmic principles. Then only we will & the society which we live in be
peaceful. When our desires are guided by dharma, then the power of desire
propels us toward what is desirable. We should utilize the skills/ gifts the
Lord has given us, for discharging our responsibilities in the roles ordained
for us.
When our desires are guarded by
dharma, then that protection ensures the power of desire does not drag us either
unwittingly or unwillingly, in directions that are deluding or degrading.
We should always pray to the all-attractive
Lord for such a divinely cyclic vision of desire which comes from Him &
which takes us to Him, the supremely desirable reality
