The all-merciful Supreme Lord!
Bhisma said to Sri Krsna: Dear Lord, what I can say when He who is the origin of the Vedas is personally present before me? Besides due to severe pain caused by the wounds inflicted by arrows, my mind has become unsteady & my limbs are so weak that my life seems about to depart. Since my understanding has become clouded & my voice is indistinct, I request You to answer Yudhisthira’s questions. How could I dare speak in Your presence? To do so would be a foolish disciple impudently speaking in the presence of his spiritual master
In response Sri Krsna awarded a benediction: Dear Bhisma, henceforth you will no longer feel the effects of pain, hunger, thirst or fatigue. Your memory will be unclouded & your understanding of everything will be perfectly clear, for your mind will remain fixed in the pure stage known as Sudhha-Satva, beyond any tinge of material influence. As your pure consciousness shines forth, like the moon after emerging behind dense clouds, your spiritual vision, the eye of knowledge, will effortlessly reveal to you all subjects
Upon hearing this,
all the sages joyfully proclaimed Bhisma’s good fortune while at the same time worshipped
Sri Krsna from the core of their hearts. As the sun was setting, all retired
for the night & returned next morning
As Maharaja Yudhisthira
fearfully approached Bhisma, Narada Muni said: Dear King, you should now
express all your grave doubts so that they can be dispelled by this great
authority
Yudhisthira was too
shy to speak to Bhisma & so he said to Krsna: Dear Lord, Your alone are
competent to address the son of Ganga & so I request You to do so on my
behalf
Sri Krsna approached
Bhisma & enquired about his wellbeing. The son of Santanu replied: Dear
Lord by your grace all my fatigue, pain & mental agitation have subsided.
In pure consciousness I can now behold full knowledge of past, present &
future, as clearly as one can examine a piece of fruit while holding it in his
hand. This is the result of Your merciful benediction upon me
Sri Krsna said: Dear
Bhisma, it is a fact that, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, I am the
origin of all branches of knowledge. Still, just to enhance your good
reputation I want you to speak to Yudhisthira, I know that as long as the earth
continues to exist, these conversations will perpetuate your fame
Being thus
encouraged by Sri Krsna, Bhisma requested Yudhisthira to begin putting forward
his questions. Sri Krsna then said: My dear Bhisma, Yudhisthira hesitates to
approach you because he is too ashamed of having pierced with his arrows those
that were worthy of his worship. For this reason, he is afraid of being cursed
by you
Bhisma said: Dear
Yudhisthira, it is the sacred duty of a Kshatriya to give up his life while
engaged in battle. The fact is a Kshatriya may even have to fight against his
relatives, or even his guru, when they oppose the path of righteousness. So don’t
be ashamed & ask questions
sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi
sanniviṣṭo mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṁ ca
vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyo vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham
Krsna says: I am
seated in everyone’s heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and
forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of
Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.
The Supreme Lord is
situated as Paramātmā in everyone’s heart, and it is from Him that all
activities are initiated. The living entity forgets everything of his past
life, but he has to act according to the direction of the Supreme Lord, who is
witness to all his work. Therefore, he begins his work according to his past
deeds. Required knowledge is supplied to him, and remembrance is given to him,
and he forgets, also, about his past life. Thus, God is all-good; God is
all-merciful
