Time I Am!
As Yudhisthira was adamant to fast until death, Vyāsdev again said: Your determination is not at all proper. As the nature of our activities is determined by Destiny, one only increases his miseries if he attempts to avoid performing his duties. The eternal living entity is wandering throughout the creation in various forms of life. Thus, he acts in various ways, according to his acquired nature & the temporary relationship he establishes with similar conditioned souls
Due to being temporary & external, our
relationships with kinsmen & friends can be compared to the meeting of travellers
at night in a hotel & their subsequent continuing on toward their separate
destinations the next morning. One should not grieve for any misfortune
encountered in such temporary relationships, since everyone follows his own
course, guided by the hand of Destiny
Although Srila Vyāsdev tried to dispel Maharaj
Yudhisthira’s intense grief, the king remained silent & morose. Seeing this
Arjun requested Sri Krsna to speak, since his elder brother’s burning grief has
placed them in a very precarious position
Sri Krsna took Yudhisthira’s hand & said: My dear
King, do not allow yourself to be overburdened by grief. The appearance &
disappearance of everyone in this world is like coming & going of those we
see in dreams. Why should you lament? All the heroes that died in the great war
are now enjoying themselves in the heavenly regions
Still, Yudhisthira remained practically inert due to
grief. Vyāsdev again said: Dear grandson, it is the duty of a king to chastise
miscreants. The Kauravas committed many offenses & so the fact that you
caused them to be killed in battle can never be considered sinful
Yudhisthira replied: Dear Grandfather, I can’t give up
the conviction that it was my greed to rule the earth, and not the noble
execution of my duty, that caused the slaughter of so many fathers, sons,
husbands, relatives & friends. What will happen to their dependents? Upon
the deaths of their husbands, so many women will voluntarily give up their
lives. As the killer of innumerable women, how is it possible that I will not
have to suffer in hell?
Vyāsdev thought over & said: O King! In my opinion
you & the other warriors on your side have acted instrumentally in the
hands of Eternal Time, which is the destroyer of everyone’s duration of life.
The kings that supported the cause of unrighteousness have met with destruction
because of their own misdeeds. Therefore, your grief & feelings of guilt are
illusory. You consider yourself to be the cause of war, but in reality, you
have acted instrumentally. Still, if you feel that you have become implicated
in sinful reactions, you can properly atone for them by performing the Ashvamedha-yajna
Krsna says:
kālo ’smi loka-kṣaya-kṛt pravṛddho lokān samāhartum
iha pravṛttaḥ
ṛte ’pi tvāṁ na bhaviṣyanti sarve ye ’vasthitāḥ praty-anīkeṣu yodhāḥ
Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I
have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you (the Pāndavas),
all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain
Time
is destruction, and all manifestations are vanquished by the desire of the
Supreme Lord. That is the law of nature. So, we are just instruments to act as
per the will of the Lord. He only devises plan & executes it by His own
free will. The whole world is moving according to the plan of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. Foolish persons who do not have sufficient knowledge
think that nature is moving without a plan and all manifestations are but
accidental formations. That is the biggest delusion
