No one else but the Supreme Lord!
Asvattāma redirected his Brahmasira weapon towards the wombs of Pandavas women. Sri Krsna said: O Asvattāma, while I was at Upaplavya with the Pāndavās, a brāhmana had assured Uttarā that her child would continue the Pāndava line at a time when it would become almost extinct. Despite your Brahmsira, the brāhmana words will remain true & child Parikshit will be born
Asvattāma angrily replied: O Krsna! What You have
declared, due to Your partiality towards the Pāndavās, will never take place.
My weapon will definitely destroy Uttarā’s embryo
Sri Krsna said: I agree that your weapon cannot prove
futile. After the foetus within Uttarā’s womb dies, I-the all-pervading Supreme
Soul, the controller of material nature, will instantly supply child Parikshit
with a new body, so that he will be able to live long & illustrious life.
You are a sinful coward & a killer of children. Consequently, you’ll have
to wander over earth for 3000 years without a companion to talk to. This is the
punishment for your sinful deeds. In fact, during the lonely period, no one
will ever come near you because of the stench of pus & blood emanating from
your body. Parikshit on the other hand will become the Kuru king & after
ruling the earth for sixty years, he will give up his body in a most glorious
manner
Vyāsdev said: Asvattāama, it is a fact that whatever
Sri Krsna has said will take place
Asvattāma disappointedly took out the jewel from his
head & gave to Pāndavās. He then departed for the forest
Sri Krsna & the Pāndavās took sage Nārada and Vyāsdev
with them and returned to where Draupadi was fasting until death. As they came before
the anguished princess of Pāncāla, Bhima handed over the jewel from Asvattāma’s
head to her
After describing what had happened, Bhima said: Dear Draupadi,
Asvattāma has been released, destitute of his prowess & good reputation, in
consideration of his being a brāhmanā & the son of our beloved guru. At Upaplavya,
you had harshly rebuked us, as well as Sri Krsna, for trying to make peace with
Kauravas. Now you should give up your grief, for Duryodhana and his cohorts has
been slain
Being pacified, Draupadi said: I had wanted revenge
for the death of my sons, but now I’m happy to hear that the son of our guru
has been released. She then gave Yudhisthira Asvattāma’s magical jewel for
achieving good fortune
Draupadi thus gave up her vow to fast until death
Uttara says in Bhagvatam:
pāhi pāhi mahā-yogin deva-deva jagat-pate
nānyaṁ tvad abhayaṁ paśye yatra mṛtyuḥ parasparam
O Lord of lords, Lord of the universe! You are the
greatest of mystics. Please protect me, protect me, for there is no one else
who can save me from the clutches of death in this world of duality
In
the world of duality everyone is envious of others, and death
is inevitable due to the dual existence of matter & spirit. The Lord is the
only shelter of fearlessness for the surrendered soul. One cannot save himself
from the cruel hands of death in the material world without having surrendered
himself at the lotus feet of the Lord
Our
only refuge is the Supreme Lord!
