Empowerment thro’ responsibility!

Queen Draupadi was informed about the death of her brothers & sons, and she came running to the massacre site from Upaplavya. When she saw the dead bodies of her sons, she fainted. Bhima quickly came & picked up Draupadi and as he tried to comfort her, she suddenly declared: If my husbands do not take revenge against Asvattāma, I will sit down here & fast until death

Yudhisthira said: Dear Draupadi, don’t lament like this for your sons have died heroes’ deaths & are enjoying life in heavenly planets. Besides, Asvattāma has already fled far away. How will you know for sure whether he has been killed or not?

Draupadi replied: There is a gem that has naturally adorned Asvattāma’s head since his birth. If I receive that jewel, I will be able to go on living. Saying this she went to Bhima & pleaded: You must kill Asvattāma & save me from my unbearable grief. Many times, in the past you had rescued me & now also I take shelter of you

Bhima could not see Draupadi suffer & so without hesitation ordered Nakula to become his chariot driver & set out following the tracks left by Asvattāma

Sri Krsna chided Yudhisthira saying: How can you remain indifferent while your younger brother departs to single-handedly fight with Asvattāma, who possesses the Brahmasira weapon, capable of destroying the whole world

In his student days, Arjun has especially pleased Dronācharya & he rewarded him with Brahmasira. Asvattāma couldn’t tolerate this & begged his father to give him Brahmasira as well. Knowing the restlessness of his son, Drona imparted the supreme weapon to him with great reluctance. He then warned- Son! You must never us this weapon against human beings, even if you face the greatest peril

Later on, Drona regretted that he had given his son so much power. After summoning Asvattāma he said: I have certainly made a great mistake by training you so highly in the military science, because I don’t think that you’re destined to live a very righteous life

After being reprimanded by his father in this way, Asvattāma became exceedingly depressed. He left his home & began wandering on earth in the hopes of alleviating his grief by achieving more power & prosperity

Giving super skills to someone who is not responsible is like giving a razor in the hands of a monkey. With every position, power & skills comes even greater responsibility

Taking responsibility is tough but empowering. It gives us the insight about improving ourselves and make a positive difference in the life of others. Powers are to serve and not for self-aggrandizement. It is therefore very important to empower only those who are aligned to higher purpose (of Dharma & life), otherwise they can destroy more than what that they build
