Careless & perish!

Asvattāma suggested to Krpā & Krtvarma that they take this good news (of mass killing of Pāncālas) to Duryodhana. They came to where Duryodhana lay & became horribly sad upon seeing his wretched condition. The Kaurava king’s life was rapidly ebbing. While numerous carnivorous beasts surrounded him, awaiting his death, he vomited blood at intervals while constantly writhing in pain

 

Asvattāma, Krpā & Krtvarma began crying & lamenting in various ways as they wiped blood from Duryodhana’s face. Asvattāma said: Dear King! I do not lament so much for you, because I know that you will soon reside in heavenly planets, but I feel very pained when I think of how your aged parents, being bereft of their children & kingdom, will have to wander over earth, begging for food and tolerating the onslaughts of nature

 

When you arrive at heaven, pls inform my father that I’ve killed Dhristadyumna & all other Pāncāla warriors as they slept securely in their military camp. Now, only 7 of our enemies remain alive-the 5 Pāndavās, Krsnā & Sātyaki

 

Although Duryodhana was unconscious, when he heard this good news, he regained his senses & said: O Asvattāma, you have accomplished what Bhisma, Drona & Karna could not! My dear son of Drona, I hope that all of us will once again meet in heaven. Saying this he remained silent for some time & then departed from his mortal body. Krpā, Asvattāma & Krtvarma repeatedly embraced the lifeless body of Duryodhana. They then remounted their chariots and departed

 

Sanjay said: My dear Dhritrāshtra, after witnessing this massacre, I also departed & reached Hastināpur at dawn the next morning. The very moment Duryodhana passed away, the spiritual vision given to me by my guru, Vyāsdev was withdrawn

 

The next morning after Asvattāma’s slaughter of the Pāncālas, Dhristadyumna’s chariot driver came to where the Pāndavās were staying on the shore of the Oghavati river. He then vividly described the great massacre & said: O King! I am the sole survivor as I managed to escape at a time when Krtvarma was little inattentive

 

When Yudhisthira heard about the death of his sons, he fell to the ground overwhelmed by grief. Sātyaki picked the king in his arms & other Pāndavās quickly came & surrounded them

 

After regaining consciousness, Yudhisthira lamented: Those who have conquered the enemies have now perished, due to being caught off guard. How incredible it is-those who were fortunate to survive the onslaughts of Bhisma, Drona & Karna have now been killed away from the battlefield, after being aroused from their sleep. From this I can understand that carelessness is the greatest cause of destruction

 

For the incautious, danger becomes disaster. When we face any danger, there is a possibility of trouble but when we are careless the trouble becomes disaster. The dangerous doesn’t have to be disastrous but it becomes when we are incautious. Distraction paves the path from danger to disaster

 

Bhagavad Gita warns that passing desires can become overwhelming, just as a storm can sweep away a boat, a storm of desire can sweep our intelligence away, and then sweep us away, if we recklessly let our mind dwell on tempting sense objects presented by our roaming senses

 

indriyāṇāṁ hi caratāṁ yan mano ’nuvidhīyate
tad asya harati prajñāṁ vāyur nāvam ivāmbhasi

 

As a strong wind sweeps away a boat on the water, even one of the roaming senses on which the mind focuses can carry away a man’s intelligence

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made.   Krsna’s plan!   As Asvattāma asked Krpa about what happened to his father Drona, with great anguish Krpa said: My dear Asvattāma, your father was killed by Dhrishtadyumna. Knowing Drona to be invincible as long as he would wield his weapons, Sri Krsna ordered Yudhisthira to falsely inform him of your death.
