Bad association & Envy: Deadly Combo!
Sri Krsna chastising Yudhisthira said-Ability is more important than brute strength in a duel with clubs & so you once again face a very dangerous situation. Who else besides you would abandon a certain victory by granting benedictions to his one remaining enemy? Even Bhima is incapable of killing Duryodhana in a fair fight. How could you dare declare that the Kaurava king can regain his kingdom after having killed only one Pāndava?
With a voice laden with disgust, Sri Krsna concluded
his chastisement by saying: O Yudhisthira! It is obvious that you are not meant
to rule earth but instead destined to live a life of mendicancy in forest!
Bhima then said: Dear Krsna, pls don’t become so
aggrieved. I can assure you that I will be able to kill Duryodhana, for I’m
eager to fight & my mace is one and a half times heavier than his
Sri Krsna was very glad to hear these chivalrous
words. He said: Dear Bhima! I’m confident that you’ll kill Duryodhana, but you
must fight with the greatest caution, for the Kaurava king is very skilled &
crafty
Bhima said: Dear Yudhisthira, be assured that by
killing Duryodhana I’ll pluck out the poisonous dart of hatred that has pierced
our hearts for many years
After saying this Bhima picked up his huge mace &
challenged: O Duryodhana, while fighting with me I want you to remember all the
wretched things that you did. It is you alone who caused the extermination of
your dynasty & so the time has come for you to suffer the harsh
consequences
Duryodhana said: Words will not help you now. Stop
talking & begin displaying your prowess as far as you are able to
Just then as Bhima & Duryodhana prepared to strike
one another, Sri Balaram arrived. All Pandavas & Sri Krsna ran to greet
him. Sri Balaram joyfully embraced each of them & when he was invited to
watch the contest between Duryodhana & Bhima, He cheerfully agreed. Sri
Balaram said: My dear cousins, while on pilgrimage I learned that whoever dies
at Samanta-Pancaka will attain a heavenly destination. Therefore, let us move
to that sacred spot so that the ultimate welfare of the combatants be assured
All consented & arrived at the place. Both heroes picked
up their mighty maces & many inauspicious signs became visible as
Duryodhana challenged Bhima with harsh words
Fierce winds blew, creating a dust storm that shrouded
everything in darkness. Meteors fell from sky as the earth trembled. Thunderbolts
created such a loud crashing noise that everyone’s hair stood on end & the
sun was eclipsed, even though it was not a scheduled time. Jackals howled ominously;
mountain peaks crashed & all directions appeared to be ablaze
Bhima challenged: O wretched son of Dhritrāshtra, you
should remember all your past wicked deeds & be assured that you’ll be
killed as a result of them
Duryodhana responded: O Bhima, for a long time I’ve
dreamt of getting the chance to fight with you. Don’t waste any more time by
uselessly boasting
The end of Duryodhana was near
Duryodhana was an epitome of evil. He continued his atrocities
even after they failed. He tried to poison Bhima, burn Pandavas including their
mother, disrobe Draupadi in public. He kept doing worse & worse things. Externally
he surrounded himself with bad association especially Shakuni, who kept giving
him bad ideas, and internally he held on to his envy. Envy & bad
association propelled him to go from worse to worst
We should be very careful of above two traits.
