Mind-Biggest Enemy!

Seeing Karna slain, Sri Krsna, Arjun & other Pāndava warriors joyfully blew their conch shells while the Pāncālas played their trumpets & waved their garments in ecstasy. Indeed, some of the Pāncāla warriors danced and shouted, while others embraced one another. All of them declared: It is our good fortune that Karna has finally been killed by mighty Arjun. Thus the Karna-sun, with its arrowy rays, after having scorched our army for many days, has at last been made to set by indefatigable, Arjun-time!

After Karna’s death, Salya beat a hasty retreat, so did the rest of the Kaurava army. Salya went to Duryodhana, who was crying because of Karna’s death, and tried to console him. Despite Salya’s attempts, Duryodhana remained standing as if demented while internally reflecting over his former evil deeds

No one even thought of rallying panic-stricken Kaurava soldiers as they trampled one another while stampeding from the battlefield. In fact, the Kaurava warriors were so frightened that each and everyone of them thought: At the moment, Bhima or Arjun may come and strike me down!

At last, Duryodhana regained composure. After ordering 25000-foot soldiers to follow him, he vowed: I will now kill Arjun so that I can repay my debt to Karna

As the Kaurav soldiers rushed into battle, Bhima & Dhristadyumna had the Pāndava army surround them. Bhima then dismounted, to properly observe the rules for fair conduct during combat. Thereafter, mace in hand, Bhima killed all of the Kaurava foot soldiers so rapidly that soon only a small remnant remained. When Arjun & other Pāndava warriors joined the fight, all the surviving Kaurava soldiers quickly fled from the battlefield

Although deserted, Duryodhana was undaunted, and he rushed at the Pāndavās while challenging them. When the Pāndava army responded by rushing at him, Duryodhana displayed amazing & unprecedented prowess. While simultaneously checking all of the leading Pāndava warriors, the Kaurava king killed thousands of enemy soldiers. He then tried to rally his soldiers, but they continued to flee, despite his repeated commands

Salya went to Duryodhana & said: My dear king, the sun is now low on the horizon & your badly beaten army cannot be rallied. You should retire for the night. Just see how the battlefield is strewn with dead warriors who gave up all comforts to attain the merit awarded to dutiful Kshatriyas. Just consider how you alone are the cause of this incredible carnage

After hearing this Duryodhana became very upset & almost mad with grief while weeping for slain Karna. Other warriors headed by Asvattāma, came and comforted Duryodhana so that at last the Kaurava king headed back to his camp

But Duryodhana will soon be back to fight for his annihilation, being driven by his uncontrolled mind and false pride

Arjun says:

cañcalaṁ hi manaḥ kṛṣṇa pramāthi balavad dṛḍham
tasyāhaṁ nigrahaṁ manye vāyor iva su-duṣkaram

Our mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong. If left unchecked, it can be very

Mischievous- as it distracts us from things that are consequential to things that are inconsequential and from serious matters to frivolous ones, from things that matter to things that simply glitter,

Mad and disconnected from reality,

Malicious and can go to any length to harm us,

Monstrous – it can degenerate to relentlessly and remorselessly destroy us

The remedy for uncontrolled mind is given by Sri Krsna

śrī-bhagavān uvāca
asaṁśayaṁ mahā-bāho mano durnigrahaṁ calam
abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa ca gṛhyate

Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: O mighty-armed son of Kuntī, it is undoubtedly very difficult to curb the restless mind, but it is possible by suitable practice and by detachment.
