Inner torment!

After letting Yudhisthira go, Karna continued to massacre Pāndava soldiers. Because their King had retreated from battle, they followed him. When Yudhisthira saw how Karna is annihilating his soldiers, he sent Bhima to rally his forces & face suta’s son. Thereafter, when Bhima & many others Pāndava heroes confronted Karna, all the leading Kaurava warriors joined the fray, and a fierce battle took place

The fighting became so savage that warriors were seen dragging each other by hair & biting and tearing each other with their teeth & nails. Thus, everything became covered with blood & the corpses floated in the rivers of blood. Seeing this, warriors on both sides became overwhelmed by a terrible repulsion that made them disheartened

After some time, the Pāndava warriors gained the upper hand. As they continued to beat the Kaurava army badly, Bhima & Sātyaki flared up with renewed vigour. Kaurava army was already wavering & when these two heroes rushed at them impetuously, it soldiers fearfully fled. Even though Duryodhana shouted at the top of his lungs to rally them, the Kaurava soldiers could not be induced to turn back

Karna rushed at Bhima, who was determined to gain revenge for Yudhisthira’s defeat. To challenge Karna, he vowed: O Suta, I will either kill you now or be killed by you

As Bhima charged, Karna laughed. After a brief skirmish, Karna managed to break Bhima’s bow. Bhima quickly picked another & struck Karna deeply with a powerful arrow, making him fall unconscious. Salya hurriedly took Karna away from battlefield & so Bhima easily slaughtered Kaurava soldiers

Meanwhile, ordered by Duryodhana, twenty of his brothers attacked Bhima, who started killing them one by one. When the surviving Dhārtarāshtrās fearfully fled, Karna regained consciousness to resume fighting with Bhima

There was an intense fight between the two. As Karna cut down Bhima’s emblem, killed his chariot driver, broke his bow & finally smashed his chariot to pieces, Bhima jumped to ground grabbing his mace. He embarked upon a great massacre of Kaurava soldiers & when a division of elephants rushed at him, he killed 700 of the infuriated beasts and smashed 100 chariots. Bhima then killed 3000 soldiers & mounted another chariot

After a while Yudhisthira re-entered battlefield. Karna killed his driver & when Yudhisthira picked up the reins, he chased him, but Bhima quickly rushed to intercept Karna. Sātyaki & other Pāndava warriors came to support Bhima, while Asvattāma, Krpā, Sakuni etc came to aid Karna. As the sun crossed the meridian, a very dreadful battle took place between the two armies, so that the dust raised darkened the entire sky

Countless carnivorous creatures wandered over the battlefield, gorging themselves on the flesh & blood of the corpses strewn everywhere. And yet, despite such ghastly scene, all the warriors on both sides cast off their fear of death and fought bravely

War is not just a physical conflict between two armies. It is also a mental conflict between the fighting spirit of the two armies. And the winner of the mental conflict gains a significant upper hand in the war

People play mental games to lower the morale of their adversaries and thus make them weak. Mental distress or upliftment is an outcome of inner strength. If we are aligned to higher principles and our efforts are not to gratify self but contribute to the larger good, our mind aligned with intelligence doubles its capacity to fight & win. Inner torment can only be resolved by alignment to higher values
