Free from the Material world!

Dhrishtadyumna confronted Asvattāma, challenging: O son of Drona, I will not kill you yet. Tomorrow I will kill your father. Only after that I will send you to the abode of Yamarāj

A fierce duel took place between the two warriors & they fought equally for some time. Asvattāma then rushed at Dhrista & after killing his horses and driver, he broke his bow and knocked down his royal umbrella and insignia. With Dhrita out of the way, Asvattāma proceeded to route the entire Pāncāla army, killing hundreds of warriors in the process

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the battlefield, Sātyaki and Somadatta fought, each determined to kill the other that very night. When Somadatta managed to break Sātyaki’s bow, the Yadu hero picked up another and immediately retaliated by cutting down his royal insignia. Sātyaki then broke Somadatta’s bow and when he picked another one, the Yādav broke it as well and cut-off his finger guard

Sātyaki the easily killed Somadatta’s horses, beheaded his driver & at last pierced him in the chest with a very fierce arrow. The mighty arrow deprived Somadatta of his life, so that hos slain body fell from his chariot onto the ground

Meanwhile Drona’s forces had regrouped, but once again Maharāj Yudhisthira and his army proceeded to route them. Drona then rushed at Yudhisthira and knocked down his royal emblem and broke his bow. Yudhisthira picked up another bow and displayed wonderful prowess by rapidly discharging a thousand arrows that severely wounded the Preceptor, causing him to sit down in great pain on the floor of his chariot

After regaining composure, Drona’s wrath flared up as he released a Vayavya weapon and at the same time broke the Preceptor’s bow. When Drona picked up another bow, Yudhisthira again broke it to pieces

But then, from far away, Sri Krsna ordered: O King! Stop attacking Drona, for the one who has been ordained to kill the Preceptor should be the one who slays him. A King should fight with an enemy king and so I request you Yudhisthira to confront Duryodhana

After thinking this over for a moment, Maharāj Yudhisthira desisted from fighting with Drona and went to where Bhima and Arjun were engaged in battle with the Kaurava army. In the near-total darkness there was great carnage on both sides, Because of the onslaughts of Bhima, Arjun, Drona & Karna, the soldiers of both armies were running away helter-skelter in all directions

With both armies routed, there was a temporary lull in fighting. Then, when Duryodhana once again rallied his army, he ordered his soldiers to carry lamps. Thus, five oil lamps were placed on each chariot, three on each elephant, one on each horse. At that time the demigods and sages stationed in the sky also lit lamps

The Supreme Lord knows everything very well who is to be killed in the war, by whom and at what time. It was just a matter of time when that execution would happen in the great war of Mahabharata. In Bhagvad Gita, Sri Krsna says to Arjun:

tasmāt tvam uttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva jitvā śatrūn bhuṅkṣva rājyaṁ samṛddham
mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvam eva nimitta-mātraṁ bhava savya-sācin

Therefore, get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, O Savyasācī, can be but an instrument in the fight

This message is for us also. If we follow the instructions of Bhagvad Gita in our lives, we also become instruments of his Lord’s mercy and be victorious in our lives. Our biggest achievement would be that we get free from the bonds of repeated cycle of birth-old age-disease-death in this material world and graduate to have spiritual bodies by going back home back to Godhead. The eternal Goloka Vrindavan! Our true home
