As Dhrishtadyumna fought with Drona, Karna, Asvattāma,
Salya & Duhsasana came and surrounded him. Sātyaki rushed to Dhrishtadyumna
aid & so Karna turned to oppose him. As Karna & Sātyaki exchanged
arrows, Dhrishtadyumna deeply pierced Vrsasena, making him drop his bow and
fall onto the floor of his chariot. Thinking that his son had been killed,
Karna flared up with rage & became determined to kill Sātyaki so that the
duel became very intense
However, when Karna saw Arjun approach in the distance
while slaughtering the Kaurava soldiers, he went to Duryodhana & said: O
King, you should order a great attack on Arjun. With him out of the way we can
do away with Sātyaki & Dhrishtadyumna in the same way we killed Abhimanyu
To implement Karna’s plan, Duryodhana ordered Sakuni
& Duhsāsana to lead a massive attack on Arjun while Karna, Drona and
numerous other Kaurava warriors surrounded Sātyaki and Dhrishtadyumna. Sātyaki
fought fiercely & as he began to consume all those who opposed him,
Duryodhana entered the fray
Sātyaki soon killed Duryodhana’s horses and driver
& then broke the Kaurava king’s bow, thus forcing him to dismount & get
onto Krtavarmā’s chariot. With Duryodhana out of the way, Sātyaki continued to
consume the Kaurava army & no one could check him
Meanwhile, Sakuni & his army attacked Arjun. Kunti’s
son quickly broke Sakuni’s bow & then killed his horses so that the Gandhāra
king got onto Uluka’s chariot. Thereafter, the father and son continued fighting
together, but Arjun routed the entire Gandhāra army, despite Sakuni’s presence.
Arjun continued to proceed to where Dhrishtadyumna and Sātyaki were contending
with Drona, Duryodhana and many other Kaurava warriors
In the meantime, Shikhandi, Bhima, Nakula &
Sahadeva came to Dhrishtadyumna’s aid & they oppressed Drona’s army so
severely that many of the Kaurava soldiers began fleeing
Seeing this, Duryodhana went to Karna and Drona &
complained: This night battle was initiated by us in the hopes of avenging the
killing of Jayadratha, but I can see that you remain indifferent, even though
my army is repeatedly routed. Formerly, both of you had vowed to vanquish the Pāndavās,
but now it appears that you have practically abandoned my cause. If this was
your intention, you should have informed me at the very beginning, for then I
never would have dared to initiate this great war. But, if you still intend to
support me, I beg you both to now fight whole-heartedly, exhibiting your full
prowess
Being goaded by Duryodhana’s words, Drona & Karna
once again rushed at Sātyaki and Dhrishtadyumna. This time they fought so
impetuously that the entire Pāndava army was soon routed, without any hope of
its being rallied. Upon seeing this, Bhima and Arjun rushed to save the
situation. When the Pāndava soldiers saw them, they gradually turned back to
face the enemy
When we see the faults in others, it tells a lot about
the self. Duryodhana rather than looking inwards & introspecting, always tried
to find faults outside in others
If greed & lust are present inside us, we
immediately notice the objects to fulfil those cravings & the people who facilitate
it. The faults we criticize are the same which are present inside us too. This
applies also to our ideologies & orientations. We can see that Liberals often
criticize conservatives for being intolerant. But those same liberals, when
they gain power, they often become intolerant in condemning the conservatives.
This goes on & on
If we obsess over the faults of others, we become not
the opposite of faults but the mirrors of those faults. Therefore,
if we see something wrong in others and feel a rage that seems righteous, we
need to humbly and honestly evaluate whether that anger is a deflection and
distortion of our anger with ourselves
