Words!

Sudaksina rushed at Arjun, but after a brief exchange of arrows his bow was broken & his flag was cut down. He hurled a blazing spear that pierced Arjun deeply, making him momentarily fall unconscious. After recovering, Arjun angrily smashed Sudaksina’s chariot to pieces & then sent him to the abode of Yamarāj

1000’s of Kamboj warriors rushed at Arjun in retaliation, but when 600 of them were killed within moments, rest beat a hasty retreat. Unable to tolerate this, Srutāyu & Acyutāyu rushed impetuously at Arjun showering arrows at him. Srutāyu pierced Arjun with a lance, making him reel due to dizziness. Taking advantage, Acyutāyu pierced him with a spear. Being deeply wounded, Arjun had to steady himself by holding on to his flagpole. When Kaurava warriors saw this, they thought that Arjun was slain & shouted with joy

Sri Krsna became exceedingly aggrieved to see Arjun practically losing consciousness. He tendered to him while Srutāyu & Acyutāyu continued showering their arrows. When Arjun came to his senses & saw how his chariot was being heavily bombarded, he quickly invoked an Aindra weapon, causing 1000’s of arrows to issue forth that severed limbs & heads of both Srutāyu & Acyutāyu

Thereafter, 1000’s of mleccha warriors having unclean habits rushed at Arjun, riding upon their elephants. Although surrounded, Arjun quickly exterminated them. He then killed 6000 cavalry & 1000 chariot warriors of Kaurava army. Indeed, while annihilating the enemy, Arjun appeared to be dancing on battlefield like a drama actor on stage

As Arjun proceeded to penetrate Kaurav ranks, Duryodhana went to Drona in panic & pleaded: O Preceptor, you must do something quickly to stop Arjun from approaching Jayadratha. Because of your partiality towards Pāndavas, you appear like a razor soaked with honey. You promised to check Arjun & yet he has already broken in our ranks. Now I can see what a fool I was for believing your words. If I had known you’re not going to keep your promise, I would have given Jayadratha permission to go home

Drona mildly replied: I don’t take offense at your accusations. Still, I’m not willing to leave the head of my army to fight with Arjun, for I vowed to capture Yudhisthira. With the support of all the other leading warriors you should be the one to contend with Arjun

Duryodhana said: I know that I’m incapable of standing before Arjun. That is why I beg you to come to our rescue

Drona placed a wonderful celestial armour on Duryodhana. Empowering it with mantras, he explained: Lord Siva took this armour from his body & gave it to Indra for killing Vrtāsura. After killing Vrtrā, Indra gave the armour to sage Angirā, who later handed it to his son, Brhaspati, who gave it to Agnivesa & I received it from him. This armour will enable you to fight with Arjun

Words have great power either to build or to destroy. Empty words with no substance, boomerangs back. Words might spiral off a violent reaction in another person. They have capacity to convey both warmth & light, they can change a person’s mood, mindset & even their life. Indeed, words can inspire transformation-individually, socially, globally. They may also start fights & wars

That is why we need to understand how our words impact others. We need too be disciplined in our speech

anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ ca yat
svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ caiva vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa ucyate
