Krsna's Vow!
On the morning of 14th day of the war, Maharāj
Yudhisthira approached Sri Krsna & said: You are our only shelter. Pls
rescue us from this great danger by enabling Arjun to fulfil his vow
Sri Krsna said: I promise that Jayadratha will be dead
upon the battlefield before sun sets today. My words cannot prove false &
so be assured that there is no doubt about this. Arjun then entered the
assembly. After being heartily embraced by Yudhisthira, he related previous
night’s wonderful dream wherein he met Lord Siva, by Sri Krsna’s grace. Hearing
Arjun’s account, all Pāndava warriors became enlivened, for they were confident
that he would fulfil his vow
As the Pāndava army set out that morning, fragrant
breezes blew from behind & there were many other signs indicating victory. Arjun
ordered Sātyaki to protect Maharāj Yudhisthira so that he would be free to
penetrate Kaurava army & fulfil his vow
Meanwhile, Drona had arranged for Jayadratha to stay a
great distance behind main body of the Kaurava army, surrounded by 6 of their
leading warriors as well as 60 000 chariots, 10 000 cavalry & 21 000
infantry. He arrayed Kaurava army partially in a circular formation &
partially in the Sakata formation, causing the vast expanse of soldiers to
spread out a distance of 6 yojanas
In the rear of Kaurava army was a lotus formation
& within the lotus was a needle formation consisting of Jayadratha & 6
protectors. Sri Krsna & Arjun blew their conch shells, the Pānchajanya
& Devadutta. When they heard this transcendental vibration, all Kaurava
soldiers fearfully trembled & lost heart while their animals passed stool
& urine. As Pāndava warriors let out a ferocious roar, Arjun urged Krsna to
take him where Dhrishtadyumna’s son Durmarsana, stood at the head of the Kaurava
elephant division
Although Durmarsana was very eager to fight, Arjun
soon created a great massacre of all Kaurava warriors that opposed him as he
proceeded to penetrate the enemy ranks
Duhsasana rallied his fleeing elephant division &
led a furious attack so that Kaurava warriors soon surrounded Arjun. The heroic
wielder of Gāndiva bow began to kill them so impetuously that the entire
division was once again routed & the battlefield became strewn with bodies
of slain elephants & men
Duhsasana was injured by Arjun’s arrows. As the
elephant division fled, he went to take shelter of Drona, who was stationed at
the head of Kaurava army. Arjun rushed at Drona, bu then at Sri Krsna’s urging,
he halted his chariot. While standing with folded hands, Arjun begged for
preceptor’s blessings for the purpose of penetrating the Kaurava army to kill
Jayadratha
Drona smilingly said: My dear Arjun, unless you
vanquish me first, there is no possibility of you even approaching Jayadratha
The Supreme Lord can accept to disrespect his vow, but
he will never accept that his devotees vow becomes void
Kṣipraṁ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvac-chāntiṁ nigacchati
kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati
He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting
peace. O son of Kuntī, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes
It’s a promise never to be broken! Let’s take his
shelter & be fearless
