Inner consciousness Vs Outer disturbance!

On Drona’s urging, Dushasana launched an attack on Sātyaki, but he quickly scattered the Kaurava forces with incessant showers of arrows. Dushasana was quickly afflicted & seeing this Duryodhana sent 3000 Trigarta warriors to assist his younger brother. When Sātyaki quickly slaughtered 500 of them, the rest fled towards Drona

Sātyaki proceeded towards Arjun, but when Dushasana persisted in attacking him, he pierced him severely in the chest. At that time Sātyaki could have easily killed him but he did not do so, remembering Bhima’s vow to kill all the Dhārtarāshtrās

Maharāj Yudhisthira, Bhima & Dhrishtadyumna led a massive attack on the Kaurava army with the idea of taking some pressure off Sātyaki & Arjun. Duryodhana rushed to check the assault & after penetrating the Pāndava army, he fearlessly slaughtered enemy soldiers with great vengeance. Yudhisthira & Bhima tried to repulse Duryodhana. With irresistible energy, Drona flared up while coming to Duryodhana’s aid. Indeed, the 85-year-old Preceptor maneuvered the battlefield like a 16-year-old youth & while doing so, he killed Sisupala’s son, Dhrstaketu, Jarasandha’s son Sahadev & Dhristadyumna’s son Ksatradharman

While the battle raged between Drona & Pāndava army, Yudhisthira became very afraid for the lives of Arjun & Sātyaki. Not only had he been unable to see the two heroes for a long time, but he also could no longer hear the twanging of Gāndiva bow. Yudhisthira especially felt responsible for Sātyaki, as he had sent him without any support. Fearing criticism for his rash act, the king went to Bhima & expressed his fears. Bhima could see that Yudhisthira was very disturbed. To pacify him he assured his brother that he was ready to execute his every command

Yudhisthira said: Dear Bhima, you must go & search for Arjun & Sātyaki. If you find them still alive, signal me by roaring loudly. Just then Yudhisthira heard the blaring of Pānchjanya conch & exclaimed: Surely Sri Krsna has taken up weapons after Arjuna’s death

Bhima tried to assure Yudhisthira that Sri Krsna & Arjun could not be in serious danger. But seeing that the king could not be pacified with words, he promised to search for them as ordered. After putting his elder brother in the care of Dhrishtadyumna, Bhima departed. While going he felt auspicious breezes indicating his success & thus it was with great confidence that he approached Drona, stationed at the head of the Kaurava army

When we encounter disappointment in our lives, fear creeps in and we may feel that maybe things will never work out for me, or there is something intrinsically wrong with me, fate is against me and other such arguments. We may think to just quit or be propelled to act rashly with more resultant distress

In life we can’t prevent outer disappointments but for sure if we develop inner detachment, we won’t fall into a ditch of discouragement. Detachment doesn’t mean that we don’t care for results, but it means that we care more for our consciousness. Our consciousness is our most essential resource & if we are positive and purposeful, we can always strive for better result next time

No result is worth risking our consciousness. Detachment protects our consciousness from falling into negative emotions when negative situations befall us

Krsna says:

karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana
mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo ’stv akarmaṇi

You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty
