As Bhisma fell from his chariot, Pandava warriors blew their thousands of conch shells & shouted victoriously, while Kauravas stopped fighting.
Duhsasana rushed to where Drona was stationed at another part of the battlefield. When the Preceptor was informed of Bhisma's fall, he fainted. After regaining consciousness, Drona forbade Kaurava army from further combat. When Pandavas understood this, they also withdrew from fighting
Thereafter, all warriors on both sides put down there weapons & went to where Bhisma was laying upon his bed of arrows. Coming before the Grandsire, both Kauravas & Pandavas offered him great respect. Inturn Bhisma welcomed everyone with great affection and said: O Rulers of the earth, my head is hanging down without support. I wish that someone would bring me a suitable pillow
Upon hearing this, all the assembled kings hurriedly went & brought excellent pillows covered with fine cloth. Bhisma refused to accept any of them and then laughingly said: These are not befitting a warrior's bed.
Upon seeing Arjuna in the midst of the assembled kings, Bhima requested him to bring a suitable pillow. In response Arjuna strung his bow. After offering obeisances to the Grandsire with tears in his eyes, he pierced the ground with three arrows that served to support the son of Santanu's head as a pillow
Being very pleased with this arrangement, Bhisma said: My dear Arjuna, you have supplied me with just the sort of pillow I desired. In fact, if you had acted otherwise, I would surely have cursed you in great anger
Bhisma then announced to the assembly: O Kings, I will give up my life when the sun crosses into the northern hemisphere. Now, if you wish to honor my dying request, I beg all of you to give up your enmity and cease from further fighting
Many physicians arrived and all of them were highly accomplished in the art of extracting arrows. Bhisma ordered: Let these physicians be given charity and then dismissed, for I have already achieved the goal that is desired by heroic Ksatriyas
When evening arrived, all great kings on Pandava and Kaurava sides circumambulated Bhisma. After assigning guards for the Grandsire's protection, everyone returned to their respective camps to rest. Sri Krsna approached Maharaja Yudhisthira and said: O King, it is your great fortune that Bhisma has at last been overthrown, for he was the greatest stumbling block on your path to victory
Maharaj Yudhisthira replied: My dear Krsna, the credit goes to You alone, for the Gransire’s defeat is simply the result of the merciful protection You give to your unalloyed devotees
Sanjay says in Gita
yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ
tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama
Wherever there is Kṛṣṇa, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and morality. That is my opinion
Do we have the same opinion?
