Control!
The next morning,
all the kings, headed by the Pandavas and Dhartarästras, once again put aside
their weapons and went to where Bhisma was laying. There they saw thousands of
women gently sprinkling flower petals mixed with sandalwood paste over the Grandsire's
body. In fact, all kinds of people had gathered there, including old men and
children, just to see the great Kuru hero laying upon his bed of arrows
However, Bhisma's
body was burning with pain because of his wounds so that he was almost bereft
of consciousness. Being exceedingly parched by thirst, Bhisma requested the
kings before him to bring some water. All the great warriors thus went &
brought cool, clear water in varieties of costly containers made of gold and
adorned with jewels. The Grandsire rejected them, saying: I have renounced the
use of all kinds of articles intended for human enjoyment
Once again Bhisma
called for Arjuna, who came forward with folded hands, awaiting his order.
Bhisma said: My dear son of Kunti, my entire body feels as if it is burning, and
my mouth is parched just like a desert. Please bring me some water
In response Arjuna
quickly mounted his chariot & strung his Gandiva bow, striking fear into
the hearts of all the Kaurava warriors. He circumambulated the Grandsire while
riding on his chariot & then picked up an arrow that he empowered with the
mantras of the Parjanya weapon. After drawing his bow back to his ear, Arjuna
pierced the earth with that arrow, a little to the south of where Bhisma lay.
From out of the crevice thus created, a stream of cool clear water rose
slightly into the air & then entered the Grandsire's mouth, satisfying his
thirst with its nectar-like taste.
Upon witnessing
this astonishing feat, all the assembled kings were wonder struck. They blew
their conch shells & beat their drums to honor the heroic son of Pandu.
Then, in the presence of those great monarchs, Bhisma glorified Arjuna by
describing him as the foremost of human beings and the best of bowmen
The Grandsire
concluded by saying: O Kings, like an idiot, Duryodhana ignored the good advice
he repeatedly received from Vidura, Sañjaya, Parasurama, Drona and Sri Krsna. Thus,
he will surely have to lie down on the battlefield after being killed by
Bhima's mace.
When Duryodhana
heard this, he became very depressed at heart. Bhisma said: My dear Duryodhana,
you should admit that Arjuna possesses superior prowess & that while
fighting under Sri Krsna's protection, he is unconquerable. Give up your enmity
& make peace with the Pandavas. Let the remaining warriors live by giving
back to Yudhisthira one-half of the kingdom so that he can rule from
Indraprastha
My dear grandson,
please accept my advice, for otherwise you will have to face the dire
consequences
Alas!
These wise words would have no meaning
We need to avoid being misdirected by our mind. If our mind is under control of intelligence, then we can analyse mind's ideas on merit & recognize the worthlessness of most of its ideas to reject them. If it's ideas do have merit, we can change course judiciously not randomly
Let us control!
