Illusion!
Enraged, Ghatotkaca broke Drona’s bow, Somadatta’s royal insignia & pierced all warriors with his arrows. Finally, when Kaurava heroes became so afflicted that they began retreating, Ghatotkaca once again attacked Duryodhana. Numerous warriors came to surround him, piercing him with their arrows. In response, Ghatotkaca flew into air while roaring ferociously
Hearing terrible shouts, Yudhisthira understood that Ghatotkaca was outnumbered & so dispatched Bhima to his rescue. Thereafter, when Kaurava soldiers saw Bhima approach, followed by Draupadi’s sons, Abhimanyu & others, many began to fearfully flee. Still, an exceedingly fierce battle took place between chariot warriors on both sides. Pāndava heroes soon gained the upper hand, forcing Kauravas to retreat
Duryodhana was enraged seeing the defeat of his army & so he impetuously rushed at Bhima sending forth showers of arrows. Indeed, Duryodhana was able to break Bhima’s bow & pierce him so deeply in chest that, due to severe pain he had to grab his flagpole to support himself. Ghatotkaca & Abhimanyu rushed to confront Duryodhana & so Drona ordered numerous warriors to King’s rescue
Drona showered arrows to check Pāndava assault, but after recovering, Bhima responded with such violent attack that he severely wounded his aged preceptor, making him fall unconscious on chariot. At this, Asvattāma & Duryodhana became very excited with rage & rushed at Bhima. When son of Vāyu saw this, he picked up his mace & jumped from chariot to face them
Bhima rushed at Duryodhana & Asvattāma & so all Kaurava warriors headed by Drona, covered him with torrents of arrows. Abhimanyu & other Pāndava warriors quickly rushed to Bhima’s aid. Ghatotkaca & other Rāksasas charged at Asvattāma, but he responded by killing many of them
Ghatotkaca then created fearful illusions that momentarily stunned Asvattāma & made his soldiers turn their backs & flee. These illusions made it appear as if all Kaurava warriors were being cut to pieces while their great commanders ran away in fear
Kaurava army panicked upon seeing this dreadful sight. Even though Bhisma & Sanjay assured them that it was mere illusion, the soldiers were so afraid that they refused to turn back. Pāndava warriors shouted victoriously seeing the flight of Kaurava army
We all occasionally fall prey to illusions. Krsna says:
yatato hy api kaunteya puruṣasya vipaścitaḥ
indriyāṇi pramāthīni haranti prasabhaṁ manaḥ
The senses are so strong and impetuous, O Arjuna, that they forcibly carry away the mind even of a man of discrimination who is endeavoring to control them
Even the greatest of learned men sometimes fall victim to material sense enjoyment due to agitated mind. Without engaging the mind in Krsna, one cannot cease such material engagements. When we become Krsna conscious, material affairs automatically become distasteful. It is as if a hungry man has satisfied his hunger by sufficient qty of nutritious eatables
