Reciprocation!

 

Bhisma continued chastising Duryodhana: Who else but you could hate the Supreme Lord & His devotees? Success always resides with Sri Krsna. Because He is now supporting the Pāndavās, there is absolute certainty that they will be victorious

 

Duryodhana said: Dear Grandfather, pls further describe the glories of Sri Krsna, for I’m eager to hear them

 

Bhisma said: It is Sri Krsna, in His expanded form as Mahā-Visnu, who generates the innumerable universes in seed-like forms. He enters each universe as Garbhodaksāyi Visnu & at last expands Himself as the all pervading Parmātma. The Ksirodakasāyi Visnu is the source of all the incarnations within the universe. It is unto Him that all the demigods look for protection. It is Sri Krsna whom all the great sages’ worship & meditate upon. It is His Supreme eternal abode that is their ultimate destination. You should also nourish your attraction for Krsna, for it is He who is the Supreme Soul of everyone, including you

 

After hearing about Sri Krsna from Bhisma, Duryodhana began to regard Him very highly. Bhisma said: Make peace with Pāndavās, for they are Sri Krsna’s beloved devotees. If you don’t do so, you’ll be doomed to destruction

 

Bhisma stopped speaking. After worshipping the Grandsire, Duryodhana returned to his tent & laid down to rest

 

Early next morning, on the 5th day of the battle, Bhisma arrayed the Kaurava army in a ‘makara’ formation. The Pāndavās countered with a ‘Syena’ formation. Soon after the fighting began, Bhima penetrated deep into the Kaurava army. While remembering how 8 of his brothers had been killed the previous day, Duryodhana became very fearful

 

Going to Dronacharya, Duryodhana said: O preceptor, you must do whatever is necessary to kill the Pāndavās. If left unchecked, they’ll destroy my entire army. Drona set out & as soon as he began to penetrate Pāndava army, Sātyaki confronted him. At the same time Bhisma attacked Bhima, to protect the Dhārtarāshtrās. As a result of this fierce duel, the battlefield soon became strewn with countless severed bodily limbs & slaughtered animals

 

Duryodhana joined Bhisma & so Arjun came to Bhima’s aid. Arjun twanged his Gāndiva & blew his Devdutta conch shell while Sri Krsna blew the Pānchajanya, causing fear to penetrate the hearts of Kaurava warriors. Bhisma cut Bhima’s bow in half. Sātyaki then came right up to the Grandsire while piercing him with numerous arrows. Bhisma retaliated by killing Sātyaki’s driver so that the unguided horses carried the Yadu hero away from the battle

 

Sumedhasa, means those who are intelligent. And, intelligence means to approach Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, surrender to Him and act as per His instructions. Sri Krsna says:

 

ye yathā māṁ prapadyante tāṁs tathaiva bhajāmy aham
mama vartmānuvartante manuṣyāḥ pārtha sarvaśaḥ

As all surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. Everyone follows My path in all respects, O son of Pṛthā

 

The higher the degree of surrender to the Lord, the higher is the reward. Reciprocation is accordingly

Emotions! As R āksasās led by Ghatotkaca attacked, only Asvattāma remained firm & dispelled their illusions. Ghatotkaca rushed at Asvattāma, but the son of Drona drove him back with a forceful stream of arrows. The son of Ghatotkaca, named Anjanaparva joined the fray, showering his arrows upon Asvattāma, but Drona’s son quickly retaliated by knocking down his flag, killing his two drivers, breaking his bow & at last killing his horses   Anjanaparva flew into the sky & began showering trees upon Asvattāma. In retaliation the son of Drona afflicted him so severely that the Rāksasā soon had to return to the shelter of his chariot.   Emotional outburst – It hurts!   Hearing Bhima’s roar, all Pāndava warriors triumphantly blew conch shells & shouted with joy. Duryodhana went to Drona on a swift chariot. With great anger he said: O Preceptor! Arjun, Sātyaki & Bhima have approached Jayadratha after vanquishing our soldiers. How could you let them defeat you & then pass right thro’ your army?
