Protect!

It was already afternoon & so to make good of his words, Bhisma led the Dhārtrāshtra’s in a massive attack upon Pāndava army. Such a dreadful battle ensued that a river of blood was soon created & site became so cluttered with bodies that it was difficult for chariots to maneuver


Despite this, Bhisma traversed so swiftly over battlefield, exhibiting his incomparable prowess, that it appealed to Pāndava warriors that there were many Bhismas. Indeed no one could approach Bhisma & thus Pāndava soldiers were slaughtered by 1000’s. Sometimes Bhisma killed 3 soldiers with a single arrow. At last, entire Pāndava army panicked & fled in presence of Krsna & Arjun


Pāndav soldiers became so afraid of Bhisma that some of them took off their armor & ran away. Many other soldiers were seen wailing aloud, as if deprived of reason. Sri Krsna said: Dear Arjun, have you forgotten your promise to kill all Kuru warriors? Now you must approach Bhisma & stop his progress before he exterminates entire Pāndava army!


Arjun replied: Dear Krsna! Pls take me to where Bhisma is now staying. I'll defeat him without delay


When soldiers of Pāndava army saw Arjun attack Bhisma, they regained their composure & rallied. Bhisma completely covered Arjuna’s chariot with showers of arrows, but Arjun managed to break his bow. When Bhisma picked up another bow, Arjun again managed to skillfully break it. The Grandsire was very pleased to see his grandson’s dexterity & so he congratulated him while at the same time urged him to fight to the best of his ability


Bhisma picked up another bow & pierced Krsna & Arjun all over his bodies. Indeed, Bhisma displayed such remarkable prowess while showering 1000’s of arrows that even Sri Krsna was amazed to see it. Still, Krsna became very angry to see how Bhisma was destroying Pāndava army while Arjun appeared to be fighting very mildly


Sri Krsna thought to himself: The way things are going; Bhisma will annihilate entire Pāndava army this very day. I had better invoke My Sudarshan cakra to kill him without delay


While Sri Krsna was thinking like this, many other Kuru warriors, including Drona, Krpā, Krtvarmā & Jaydratha, surrounded Arjun while showering their arrows. Sātyaki came to Arjuna’s aid & while staying at his side he tried his best to rally the retreating Pāndava army


Sri Krsna declared: Sātyaki, I'll now invoke My Sudarshan cakra to kill Bhisma, Drona & all Dhritrāshtra’s sons. Thus, enabling Pāndavās to take back their rightful kingdom!


In the fight of Dharma & Adharma, the Supreme Lord always takes side of Dharma, even at the expense of breaking his vow. He cannot let his devotees down. Krsna says:

kṣipraṁ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvac-chāntiṁ nigacchati

kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati


He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. O son of Kuntī, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes


If we are surrendered & on the path laid by Him, the Lord protects us at any cost

  Principles to fight & die for! Arjun had Uttara halt his chariot at some distance from Kaurav army to survey the opposition. He thought that if he could simply vanquish Duryodhana, other Kauravas would automatically desist. But he noted that Duryodhana was absent. Arjun ordered Uttara: Avoiding the Kaurav army, take the road to Hastināpur so that we can overtake Duryodhana and retrieve the plundered cows   From Arjun’s course, Krpā could understand his intention & so he had ordered the entire Kaurav army to go & protect Duryodhana.
