Sveta was fighting bravely

Bhisma mounted another chariot & at this time heard a voice from sky saying: O descendent of Kuru, act decisively, for the time has arrived that the Creator has fixed for you to kill Sveta. Bhima, Sātyaki, Dhrishtadyumna, & others tried to rescue Sveta, but Drona, Salya and Krpā checked them

 

Sveta rushed at Bhisma, sword in hand & managed to cut his bow in half. Bhisma picked up another bow & even though protectors had meanwhile surrounded Sveta, he rushed at him while remembering the celestial instruction

First Bhisma showered his arrows to check other Pāndava warriors. Then he released an arrow empowered with the energy of Brahmā. When that mighty Brahmāstra pierced Sveta’s body & entered the earth, it took his very life. Upon seeing the fall of Sveta, Pāndava warriors lamented bitterly & Shikhandi trembled with fear. On the other side, Kaurava warriors shouted with joy while Dushasana danced gleefully on battlefield

Thereafter, fierce fighting continued for the rest of the day with victorious Bhisma predominating by killing innumerable Pāndav soldiers. As the Sun last began to set, Pāndava army was badly routed & so Maharāj Yudhisthira ordered his soldiers to retire for the day

Duryodhana was overjoyed to have witnessed the prowess Bhisma had displayed, but in Pāndava camp, there was only gloom. Filled with grief, Pāndavas approached Sri Krsna & Yudhisthira expressed his fear that their defeat at the hands of Bhisma was immanent

Yudhisthira said: Dear Lord, since Bhisma is unconquerable, I’ll retire to the forest & perform austerities. I feel that this would be a much nobler way of spending my remaining days, rather than cause deaths of all Pāndava warriors. Bhisma slaughtering our soldiers by the thousands with celestial weapons. Only Arjun can counter this, and yet he seems content to remain on the battlefield as a spectator, as if he has lost all enthusiasm for fighting

Sri Krsna said: Dear Yudhisthira, do not be aggrieved. I can assure you that Shikhandi is predestined slayer of Bhisma. Please have faith in My words & give up your anguish

The first day of Mahabharata war came to an end. What is in store for day 2?

If we have faith in the Supreme Lord, despite many obstacles on way, we will still find way to success. Sri Krsna has perfect plan for us if we surrender to his instructions

tasmāt sarveṣu kāleṣu mām anusmara yudhya ca

mayy arpita-mano-buddhir mām evaiṣyasy asaṁśayaḥ

Therefore, Arjuna, you should always think of Me in the form of Kṛṣṇa & at the same time carry out your prescribed duty of fighting. With your activities dedicated to Me and your mind and intelligence fixed on Me, you will attain Me without doubt

Krsna doesn't say that one should give up his prescribed duties or engagements but perform thinking of Him by chanting Hare Krsna. This will free one from material contamination & engage the mind and intelligence in Krsna
