Identification!
 
Sri Krsna said to Arjun as he lost will to fight on the battlefield: O son of Kunti, you’re lamenting that you’ll have to kill Bhisma, Drona & other great warriors on the Kaurava side, but factually you’ll just be changing their outward dresses under My order. You see, the living being is distinct from his material embodiment. Can’t you see how the body is constantly changing from childhood to youth & then to old age? Similarly, the living being accepts a new body after the destruction of his present one
 
dehino ’smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā
tathā dehāntara-prāptir dhīras tatra na muhyati
 
The external body is a mechanical vehicle made of material elements, and it imperceptibly changes at every moment. But, because the body is created by Mother nature under My supreme direction, it works so wonderfully that all conditioned souls are fooled into thinking that they maintain the same body throughout the entire lifetime. The fact is that the body is constantly changing whereas you, the witness, the observer within the body, are unchanging & eternal
 
avināśi tu tad viddhi yena sarvam idaṁ tatam
vināśam avyayasyāsya na kaścit kartum arhati
 
My dear Arjun, he who dwells within the body is immutable. He is not destroyed when the body is slain. The consciousness that pervades the entire body is indestructible. Consciousness is the visible symptom of the eternal soul’s presence. In other words, even though the soul cannot be directly perceived, due to its atomic size & subtle nature, its recognizable effect is consciousness
 
avyakto ’yam acintyo ’yam avikāryo ’yam ucyate
tasmād evaṁ viditvainaṁ nānuśocitum arhasi
 
My dear Arjun, do not allow yourself to be bewildered by accepting the external as the self. Because the soul cannot be destroyed at any time, you should not hesitate to execute your duty as a kshatriya and fight
 
My dear son of Kunti, pls listen attentively as I explain to you more confidential knowledge. Beyond your duties as a kshatriya, there is a higher & supreme duty. The eternal duty of every living being is to engage in the devotional service of the Supreme Lord without personal motivation or attachment. Even though I play the role of a friend & cousin, you should know that I am the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and there is no higher truth than Me
 
janma karma ca me divyam evaṁ yo vetti tattvataḥ
tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti mām eti so ’rjuna
 
I am the Supreme enjoyer, the Supreme proprietor, and the best well-wishing friend of everyone. One who knows Me such never has to accept birth again within this material world
 
We identify ourselves with our body but in fact our only identification is the soul, which is part & parcel of the Super soul Krsna. This misconception is the basis of our bewilderment & suffering in this material world. We face so many problems with this and fall into suffering abyss
