The Kurus & the Pāndavās fought, forgetful of their family relationships & bent upon killing one another as if possessed by demons. During the great battle many heroic warriors fell from the chariots, never again to rise up. Chariots collided with one another & huge elephants crushed infantry & chariots, steeping on them in great anger. These huge elephants, mad with rage, could not be stopped as they tore through the enemy lines until at last, filled with thousands of arrows, they fell dead on the ground

Elephants confronted elephants & tore at one another with their huge tusks. The foot soldiers that protected the elephants were armed with bows, brightly colored battleaxes, maces, lances & swords, all of which were covered with human blood. When these terrible weapons were brought down upon the enemy, the other warriors heard the loud sounds of wailing voices

Some men had their heads severed, some lost their arms or legs & some were pierced with lances or hacked with swords. Some were pierced by tusks of elephants & then flung into the air at a great distance

Gita emphasizes that life’s ultimate purpose is to raise our consciousness to the spiritual level, free from mortality & misery that besets our consciousness attached to material things. Krsna therefore advises Arjuna to fight unselfishly, without considering victory or defeat, profit or loss. The Lord articulates a universal principle: Do your duty without attachment to results

What is the ultimate purpose of raising one’s consciousness? Sri Krsna recommends detached dutifulness as the means to liberation from material existence. Eventually, the Gita’s flow culminates in Krsna recommending devotional dutifulness, leading to the attainment of Krsna’s personal abode, for an eternity of ecstatic loving reciprocations
