Sāstra!

After hearing about the evil portents & inauspicious positions of planets & stars, indicating destruction of Kurus from Vyāsdev, Dhritrāshtra said: O great sage! The terrible slaughter that is about to take place must be ordained by fate. I’m sure that all the kings who die on the battlefield will attain exalted destinations in their next lives

Vyāsdev said: The impending war is abominable & it is within your power to stop it by following the dictates of righteousness. You should obey my command & force your wicked son to give the Pandavas back their rightful share of the kingdom. Dhritrāshtra argued: My son is not under my control & so even though I’m not inclines towards this ghastly war, I was not able to prevent it

After hearing this Vyāsdev departed, leaving Dhritrāshtra to ponder over the impending calamity by himself. He remained absorbed in thought for some time & every now and then heaved a deep sigh. As he thought about the millions of men that had assembled, he turned to Sanjaya & requested him to utilize his celestial vision so that he could describe the countries from which the warriors had come

Sanjay said: O King! Jambudvipa is circular in shape & surrounding it is the salt ocean. Part of it is shaped like a rabbit & part is shaped like a Asvattha (Banyan tree). Just as one can see his face reflected in a mirror, one can see Jambudvipa reflected upon the surface of the moon. There are 9 bow-shaped varsās in Jambudvipa

Dhritrāshtra said: Pls tell me more about Bhārat-varsa

Sanjay replied: If the resources of Bhārat-varsa are properly utilized according to the inherent qualities & potencies, the entire world would be just like a great Kāmdhenu from which Dharma, Artha, Kāma, Moksha are easily milked. It is to greedily possess this wonderful earth that your sons are now engaged in fighting with the pious sons of Pāndu

He next described the duration of life in 4 ages & concluded by saying: In Kali-yuga there is no fixed duration of life, because many persons die within their mother’s womb, or just after childbirth. Sanjay described the six other islands besides Jambudvipa. Then he talked about other planets such as the Sun & the Moon

He concluded by emphasizing to Dhritrāshtra that even though he was able to see the true perspective of the various planetary systems by his gifted celestial vision, the same perfect descriptions were available in sastra, so that common man can take advantage of them

For one who wants to know who he is, what is his relationship with mother nature, what is his position in material world and the purpose of being given human body, from where he is coming & where he would go after leaving this body, what is his relationship with the Supreme Lord, what is his constitutional position etc, one needs to read scriptures like Bhagvad Gita, Srimad Bhagvatam, Rāmayan etc

Unless we read, we will make our own concocted ideas which solves no purpose & bewilders us too

Let’s read!
