After advising
Bhisma how Lord Parasuram can be defeated, the 8 brahmanas, all resembling one another,
suddenly disappeared. When Bhisma awoke,
he felt great joy while remembering his dream. Later that morning, as battle resumed,
fighting became fierce. Parasuram hurled a terrible dart that pierced Bhisma's shoulder,
making blood flow profusely from the wound. Bhisma retaliated by piercing Lord in
the forehead with an arrow. The Lord responded by piercing Bhisma in the chest,
causing him to fall to the ground unconscious, covered with blood, but he soon recovered
& hurled a fierce dart that pierced Parasuram in the chest
Parasuram trembled
violently & lost consciousness, but since Akrtavrana grabbed him, he did not
fall from his chariot. After being cared for by his charioteer, Parasuram resumed
fighting with even greater anger & invoked the Brahmastra. Bhisma successfully
invoked another Brahmastra & as the two supremely powerful weapons collided
mid-air, an intense heat & glaring effulgence were created that afflicted demigods
and made the earth tremble. Indeed, all living
creatures were tormented by the heat & it was at this time that Bhisma thought
of releasing the Prasvapa weapon
As soon as this
weapon was thought of, the mantras for discharging it automatically appeared within
Bhisma's mind. Then a chorus of loud voices from the sky forbade Bhisma, saying:
Do not release this Prasvapa weapon! Bhisma ignored the warning & carefully
aimed the weapon at Parasuram. Just then, Sage Narada appeared to Bhisma & said:
Do not humiliate your preceptor in this way
While Narada was
speaking, Bhisma could see the 8 brahmanas in the sky, smilingly ordering him to
obey devarsi’s command. Bhisma thus withdrew the Prasvapa weapon, but to continue
fighting he invoked another Brahmastra. Parasuram exclaimed: O Bhisma, wretch that
I am, I have been defeated by you!
Jamadagni &
other forefathers appeared before Parasuram & advised: Son, you should never
again fight with Bhisma, nor with any other kshatriya for that matter. Instead,
engage yourself in strictly executing duties of a brahmana like studying Vedas &
performing austerities
Previously we
ordered you to exterminate all Kshatriyas but now we want you to make this as your
last fight. Bhisma is an incarnation of one of the Vasus & it is Arjun
& not you who is ordained by the Supreme Lord Krsna to vanquish him in
battle
Lord Parasurama
reflected on his father’s words & calmed down
We all are
born & ordained for specific duties. This can easily be understood by
reading scriptures like Bhagvad Gita & understanding the only purpose of
this human form of life is to serve the Supreme Lord & his pure devotees
dūreṇa hy
avaraṁ karma buddhi-yogād dhanañ-jaya
buddhau śaranam anviccha kṛpaṇāḥ phala-hetavaḥ
Krsna says: O
Dhanañjaya, keep all abominable activities far distant by devotional service,
and in that consciousness surrender unto the Lord. Those who want to enjoy the
fruits of their work are misers
