Mind!

Pandavas army assembled on the western plain of Kurukshetra, facing eastward towards Kaurava army. Men came from all over Jambudvipa to take part in battle & hence entire earth, except Kurukshetra, appeared to be devoid of horses & men, as only the aged, women & children were left at home

Kauravas & Pandavas first established ground rules for combat so that chariot warriors were restricted to fighting with other chariot warriors & horse soldiers could fight with other horse soldiers. Another rule was that, before striking an opponent with weapons, a warrior was obligated to give advance notice in the form of a challenge. Those who were engaged in transporting weapons, as well as musicians & other non-combatants were exempted from attack

As warriors on both sides gazed upon one another, they felt great joy & wonder, for never before had there been such an unprecedented assembly of kings on a battlefield. As the armies waited for the start of great battle, Vyāsdev came to see Dhritrāshtra in Hastinapur

After being respectfully welcomed, the son of Parāsara said: Dear son! There is not the slightest doubt that all your sons will soon be killed on the battlefield. Still, you should not lament for this, for such mass destruction takes place under direction of Eternal time, which represents the will of the Supreme Personality of Godhead

O King! I’ve come here to offer you divine vision so that you can directly witness upcoming battle, from where you’re seated in your palace. Dhritrāshtra said: Father! I don’t want to see slaughter of my relatives. Still, due to my intense curiosity, I am eager to hear all about everything that will take place

For this purpose, Vyāsdev gave Sanjaya divine eyes, enabling him to perfectly see the entire battlefield at Kurukshetra. Not even the slightest detail remained concealed from his vision, whether it be day or night. Vyāsdev also gave Sanjaya the benediction that no weapon would afflict him, thus ensuring that he would survive the great war

Vyāsdev then said: Dhritrāshtra, I can see evil omens in Hastināpur, indicating doom. The deities of demigods & goddesses in the temples laugh, sometimes cry & break into cold sweat, vomit blood & occasionally fall down upon platform of their altars. Women, even if not pregnant are giving birth to monstrously deformed children. Cows are giving birth to asses & other inauspicious animals are born. Some of these have 3 horns, some 4 eyes & others have 5 legs

Many evil portents were pointed together with inauspicious positions of planets & stars indicating great destruction of Kurus

Despite being foretold about the impending disaster, Dhritrāshtra’s mind was still hoping that his sons would win. Such is the potency of the uncontrolled mind. It assumes position the position of our master, instead of being subordinate to our intelligence and forces us to implement its baseless desires

When we try to put the mind in its place, it will shriek & scream & neglecting its position feels like poison. Nonetheless, we should persist in doing things important to us & eventually we can feel the nectar of inner fulfillment, outer achievement or both

Let’s be in control of our mind
