Lamentation!

Arjun lamented as he saw his relatives on the other side of the battlefield and filled with compassion said: This massacre will only result in evil. So many dynasties will be destroyed, causing their family traditions & moral standards to be discarded. The unprotected women will give birth to unwanted progeny who will thereafter make the world a hellish place to live. O Krsna! If out of greed I fight this sinful war surely, I will have to eternally suffer in hell as punishment

After saying this, Arjun threw down his bow & arrows and dejectedly sat on his chariot. Sri Krsna chastised Arjun saying: O descendent of Bharata, this behavior is not at all befitting an Aryan (one who knows the higher values of life), and it will never lead you to heaven. Give up this weakness of heart & fight, for that is your religious duty as a kshatriya

kutas tvā kaśmalam idaṁ viṣame samupasthitam
anārya-juṣṭam asvargyam akīrti-karam arjuna

In his bewilderment Arjun was still intelligent enough to understand that he was a tiny conditioned soul whereas Sri Krsna was the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, he surrendered to Sri Krsna & begged Him to give instructions that would free him from his dilemma & put him on the path of righteousness

In response Sri Krsna first chastised His disciple for speaking like an authority while at the same time exhibiting the qualities of a deluded person

aśocyān anvaśocas tvaṁ prajñā-vādāṁś ca bhāṣase
gatāsūn agatāsūṁś ca nānuśocanti paṇḍitāḥ

Sri Krsna then instructed Arjun about the nature of the eternal soul

We also at times behave as if we are a panditah (learned person) but actually are bewildered with our own mentally concocted ideas

One who is learned is the one who knows what body is and what soul is. He does not lament for any stage of the body, neither in the living nor in the dead condition. Knowledge means to know matter & spirit and the controller of both

Arjuna argued that religious principles should be given more importance than politics or sociology, but he did not know that knowledge of matter, soul & the Supreme is even more important than religious formularies. And because he was lacking in that knowledge, he should not have posed himself as a very learned man. As he did not happen to be a very learned man, he was consequently lamenting for something which was unworthy of lamentation

The body is born and is destined to be vanquished today or tomorrow; therefore, the body is not as important as the soul. One who knows this is actually learned, and for him there is no cause for lamentation, regardless of the condition of the material body

Do we lament for something not worth it?
