Wise!
After telling the
story of Garuda where the Supreme Lord warned him to not act again with pride,
Kanva Rsi told Duryodhana: You should also give up your false pride, knowing
that you are able to live only as long as you don’t approach Pāndavās in
battle. You should accept Lord Krsna’s advice, for He is Lord Vishnu incarnated
upon earth. Make a peaceful settlement with your cousins
Unfortunately,
envious Duryodhana became very annoyed while listening to Kanva Rsi. Breathing
heavily & frowning, he glanced at Karna & suddenly burst out laughing
with great disdain. He slapped hi thigh & said: O sage! I’m whatever God
has made me & thus I’ll never change. For this reason all of your advice is
useless
Nārada Muni said: O
Duryodhana! You should give up your pride & obstinacy and listen to the
good advice of your well-wishers. It has been repeatedly seen in history that
obstinacy & pride are the causes of innumerable difficulties. Therefore,
you should be intelligent enough to avoid unnecessary suffering by discarding
these two faults & giving up your enmity towards Pāndavās
Duryodhana said:
Dear Sage! I appreciate the value of your words which are full of deep meaning.
Unfortunately, it is not within my power to follow such good instructions
Dhritrāshtra said
to Krsna: Dear Lord! You have come here to offer us advice that is full of
wisdom & virtue and Your intention is certainly to benefit both my sons
& the sons of Pāndu. Still, due to my son Duryodhana not being cooperative.
I’m not free to implement Your proposals. Pls try to persuade my wicked son
that he should obey my commands & listen to the advice of his elders like
Vidura, Bhisma & Gāndhāri
The Lord turned to
Duryodhana & addressed him in a very sweet voice: You should take this opportunity
to follow the path of virtue by making peace with Pāndavās. I’m sure that even
you will admit that there is a distinction between noble & abominable
behavior. It is My duty to warn you that all of your inclinations are perverse
& thus leading you towards destruction. Can’t you see how foolishly you
discard the advice of wise & elderly persons and instead take council of wicked
inferior men?
This question is a universal
question we all should ask ourselves. But first we should have wisdom to know
who a wise person is. As per Bhagvad Gita one is wise if he has full knowledge &
is always engaged in pure devotional service of the Supreme Lord Krsna. He is
the best & Krsna is very dear to such person & he is also very dear to
Krsna
teṣāṁ jñānī
nitya-yukta eka-bhaktir viśiṣyate
priyo hi jñānino ’tyartham ahaṁ sa ca mama priyaḥ
One who is in
knowledge of the Absolute Truth and free from all material desires becomes a
really pure devotee of the Lord
