Succumb or?
As Karna said to Duryodhana that he can defeat Pāndavās single-handedly, Bhisma angrily interrupted him saying: O Suta’s son, you can boast, for anyone can talk like a hero, but I assure you that with Lord Krsna’s help, Arjun will not only cut down your excessive pride, but your life as well
Karna said: O Grandsire, I admit superiority of Lord Krsna, but since He has vowed not to use weapons, there is nothing He can do to harm us. As you’ve spoken to me so harshly, I vow not to fight in upcoming war until I’ve witnessed your death! He then stormed out of the assembly
Bhisma laughingly said: Duryodhana, Karna will never be able to fulfill his boasting words. He already spoiled the power of his virtue & austerity by misrepresenting himself as a Brāhmanā to beg for Parasurām’s Brahmāstra. When the son of Jamdagni realized that Karna had deceived him, he cursed him to forget the mantra at time when he would desperately attempt to employ the weapon
Irritated, Duryodhana challenged: Why are you so sure about Pāndavās victory? After all, they are mortals just like everyone else. Anyway, I don’t care for your opinion or of any other Kuru, as I simply depend upon my strength. I'm confident that, along with Karna & Dushasana, I can defeat Pāndavās & Krsna if need be
There was a brief pause!
Vidura then said: Dear assembled kings, the wise have explained that self-restraint is the basic principle of all good qualities. Persons who lack self-restraint are to be condemned, for they're causes of fear, just like demons. In this connection, I'll tell a short story
Once a hunter spread his net on the ground & soon 2 birds that lived together became entangled in it. By flying upwards, the powerful birds carried away the net & it appeared that they had escaped immanent danger. But hunter was undaunted & began to follow birds hoping to retrieve his net & capture his prey too. A sage who lived nearby saw this & said: How astonishing it is that you, who lives on earth is swiftly running to catch those who live in sky?
Hunter said: At the time when these 2 birds quarrel, they’ll come under my control. It soon happened that birds began to fight & while quarreling they fell to ground. Being ensnared in net, they were easily caught by hunter
Vidura advised: Dear Kings! The Kurus shouldn’t fight amongst themselves, thus causing their own destruction. Instead, Pāndavās & Kauravas should live happily together
One should evaluate consequences of actions rather than follow one’s mind game plan. When someone imposes restraint on us we fight them to regain our freedom, but we make no efforts for our self-transformation. We go with our bad habits & don’t give up what our crazy mind pushes
We should be disciplined not to follow our mind’s directions but envision to purify ourselves from bad habits. It’s easy to follow self-defeating cravings & succumb but it takes so much effort to reform
By being spiritual it becomes very easy
