Hearing his father lamentations, Duryodhana said: There is no need to lament as we're quite capable of vanquishing our enemies. At the beginning of their exile, Lord Krsna & numerous other kings had visited Pāndavās & had urged Yudhisthira to allow them to attack Hastināpur to take kingdom back by force after killing me & my brothers

When I heard of this, I became fearful. At that time, almost all the kings of earth as well as citizens of Hastināpur, spoke ill of you for having sanctioned the gambling match & remaining silent while Draupadi was insulted. I went to Bhishma, Drona, Krpa & expressed my great fear, suggesting that I surrender to Pāndavās, since fighting with them seemed hopeless. However, they assured me that each was powerful enough to defeat all the kings of earth

At that time, Pāndavās were in a very powerful position, whereas now they are practically destitute of allies. If there was no real need to fear them before, why we should be afraid now? O father! I’m not thinking of myself. I could never bear to make you suffer due to my defeat

Practically all kings of the world are now supporting me & they simply laugh to see how you lament like this. They know that I became foremost wielder of the club after satisfying my teacher Balarāma. Everyone thus sees that your fear of Bhima is unfounded. You can also be rest assured that Bhisma, Drona & Krpa will easily subdue Arjun, either singly or combined. We have a much larger army than Pāndavās & a great number of leading warriors. Hence, I’m fully confident of my victory

Turning to Sanjay, Duryodhana enquired: Tell me more about the preparations Pāndavās have made for the battle

Sanjay began praising Arjun highly & upon hearing this Duryodhana angrily cut him short, criticizing his eagerness to glorify the enemy. To ease the tension, Dhritrāshtra requested Sanjay to tell about Arjun’s chariot, banner & horses

Sanjay said: Arjun’s banner is of celestial origin & thus it is composed of subtle matter. As such, it can’t be affected by anything gross. His chariot is pulled by 100 white horses that were given to him by Gandharva Chitrasena. Along with these horses came the benediction that no matter how many of them were killed in battle, their number would remain 100

Despite so many people advising Duryodhana on the reality & strength of his opponents, his foolhardiness and overconfidence is getting the better of him. This happens to us as well

Confidence is essential to do something challenging, pushing us to go beyond the boundaries & stretching to achieve the difficult. But if confidence morphs into arrogance & makes us the person who knows-all & can do-all, we are in for delusion. As sooner or later our abilities will desert us & then we are broke unable to process the loss. To lay sole claim to our abilities is ignorance

Our abilities only come from the Supreme Lord & has to be used in his service. This brings humility & is a recipe for success
