Real Values!
Sanjay regained
consciousness & was comforted by Dhritrāshtra. He then listed Pāndavās
allies. After hearing this, Dhritrāshtra lamented: Oh! These combined warriors
seem to be equal to Bhima in strength. It is he that I’m especially afraid of
& for this reason I pass my nights sleeplessly. I’m convinced that if there
is war, Bhima will not allow even one of my sons to remain alive
It is as if I can
see his terrible uplifted mace before me. I remember how even as a child, Bhima
tormented my sons. I can visualize him impetuously hurling his club & I wonder;
how will my sons’ head will possibly bear the impact? Since Bhima was not under
my control as a child, how can I expect that he will be pacified now after
having been offended by us in so many ways?
My sons are such
fools for disregarding my advice & daring to fight with Bhima. They simply
see the opulence & fame they hope to enjoy, without considering terrible
destruction that is at hand. Vidura had pointed out this great danger to me
from very beginning. Unfortunately, because my destiny is under control of
Eternal Time, I’m helpless to do anything. It is as if I’m tied to the wheel of
time & cannot escape its inevitable course, leading to the destruction of
all the Kauravas
Aside from Bhima, I’m
terribly afraid of Arjun. In fact, I visualize him severing the heads of Kauravas
with sharp arrows. Long ago, Arjun enabled Agni to devour the Khāndava forest.
Now the same two Krsnas & the Gāndiva bow are once again ready to fight, and
they are unmatched by any warrior on our side
I know that I’ve
done a great injustice to the pious Yudhisthira. And because the Creator
Himself, Lord Krsna, is guiding the Pāndavās, I can only conclude that a war
will end in disaster. Therefor I urge all of you assembled here to share my
attitude & make peace with Pāndavās. This is the only way that I will ever
be able to achieve peace of mind
Sanjay said: O
King! Your lamentations are useless. In the end you always give in to your
crooked son, inspite sufficient knowledge of right & wrong. Now you lament,
but it is too late. Before, when Sakuni had deceitfully taken away Yudhisthira’s
kingdom, you laughed with glee & declared again & again: Just see! This
has been won by my son!
It was Pāndavās who
conquered the earth & yet when Duryodhana deceitfully acquired their
kingdom, you were proud of him thinking, “My son has become unrivaled emperor of
the world”
Everyone has values
but the problem is that their values may not reflect real values. Here Dhritrāshtra
is lamenting about absence of values in his sons but he himself is not following
pertinent values. Valuing the less important above the more important is
tragically commonplace amongst us. Such distortion of values often arises from
fundamental distortion wherein we value the material more than spiritual
When we value this
material world more than the source of the world which is the Supreme Lord, the
progression takes a dangerous turn to disaster. If our values don’t reflect
real values , we are in for a big jolt when we face life’s inevitable reality check
