Preya or Sreya?
Maharāj Yudhisthira approached Krsna & said: Lord! My brothers & I are completely dependent upon You. Infact it’s only due to that reliance, we fearlessly dare to demand our kingdom back from Duryodhana
Sri Krsna said: Dear King! I’m ready to accomplish anything upon receiving your order
Yudhisthira said: I’m very aggrieved that Dhritrāshtra follows dictations of his evil-minded son & is thus unwilling to give us back our rightful share of kingdom. How pitiful it is that Dhritrāshtra ardently wants to avoid war & yet at the same time, cannot muster enough courage to control his wicked son. As a compromise we had requested only 5 villages-Vārnavata, Avishthala, Mākandi, Vrkasthala & any other as fifth-but even that proposal was rejected by Duryodhana
Due to this, we've been put into a very awkward position, because as Kshatriyas our virtue lies in protecting others & giving charity. Without ruling some kind of kingdom & thus acquiring necessary wealth, it's impossible for a kshatriya to perform his religious duties. Oh! What a misfortune it is that I was born in a kshatriya family, for I’ll have to slaughter my relatives while performing my occupational duty
O Krsna, war is such a great evil! Not only does the defeated side lose, but the victor also suffers greatly because many of his relatives & dear ones are inevitably killed. Besides this, when one comes out victorious, all survivors in the enemy camp maintain their bitter enmity. Later, when some weakness is detected, they once again strike with a vengeance. Only one who has given up all thoughts of victory & defeat can become happy and thus sleep peacefully at night
But one who provokes hostilities will be in constant anxiety. He’ll sleep restlessly, as if he knew that there is a dangerous snake in his room. Enmity can never be neutralized by more enmity. Instead, it becomes inflamed more & more. Of course, if one’s enemy were to be completely exterminated, there might be some peace of mind, but such an act is most cruel & sinful
Krsna! I'm perplexed by this dilemma. As a kshatriya I don't want to give up my kingdom, for this would be as good as death. On the other hand, I don’t want to cause extinction of the Kuru dynasty. I felt that peace should be sought at all costs, even if we have to humble ourselves before Kauravas
Pls describe the best course of action so that both our interests & our virtue may be preserved. Except You we don’t have any other refuge
This is a Catch 22 situation & happens to all of us. We also face situations in our lives when to do or not to do is a Big ?Question?
There is “Preya”-immediate benefit, catering to senses & there is “Sreya”-long term benefit. Either we act now & regret later or we be patient now & reap greater benefits later. Caught in this web, how we can find clear path forward?
Seeking guidance from the Supreme Lord is our only refuge. He stays as Paramatma inside us & we all have perfect guide within
