Madness!

Dhritrāshtra asked Sanjay: Pls describe the great warriors on Pāndavās’ side & who they had been assigned to fight with

Sanjay replied: Dhrstadyumna has been made commander-in-chief of Pāndava army & along with Draupadi’s sons, he will fight with Drona. Sikhandi has been allotted Bhisma & Yudhisthira quota is Salya. Bhima will fight against all your sons. Karna, Jayadratha & Samsaptakas have been set aside for Arjun. The 5 Kekaya kings will against other Kekaya princes, as well as Malavas and Salavas. Abhimanyu will combat sons of Duryodhana & Dushashana as well as Brhadvala. Cekitāna would fight Somadatta, Satyaki with Krtavarmā, Sahadev is ordered to kill Sakuni & Nakula will encounter deceitful Uluka, as well as the Sārasvata tribes

Hearing this Dhritrāshtra once again began to piteously lament, for he felt that destruction of his dynasty was inevitable. With great anguish he concluded: Oh! Even though I am crying myself hoarse, my wicked son disregards me!

Duryodhana said: Father, I can assure you that the Kuru heroes & our superior army will easily vanquish the Pāndavās

Dhritrāshtra turned to Sanjay & said: My son speaks like a madman!

Dhritrāshtra despair deepened more & more as he continued to hear about impending war. Finally in desperation, he turned to his son & implored: Dear Son! Pls give up idea of fighting with Pāndavās & instead make an alliance of peace with them. Is not half the earth a sufficient kingdom for you? None of the great Kuru warriors want to fight & neither do I. You must be so stubbornly determined due to being urged on by evil-minded Dushasana, Karna & Sakuni

In response Duryodhana arrogantly said: Who cares for other Kurus? If they don’t want to fight, then Karna, Dushasana & I’ll challenge Pāndavās! We don’t need to depend upon you or any of Kuru warriors. Either I will kill Pāndavās & rule entire earth or having killed me, they’ll reign unrivalled. I’m willing to sacrifice my life or whatever else I possess, but I’ll never live side by side with Pāndavās. It is for this reason alone that I’m unwilling to give them even the land which is pierced by the sharp point of needle

Hearing this, Dhritrāshtra declared: Duryodhana, You Fool! I hereby abandon you forever. Just remember my words when you see all your elephants, chariots & warriors smashed & yourself lying on ground fatally wounded. I feel sorry for those heroic kings, for they’ll have to follow you to the abode of Yamarāj

Our desires drive our perceptions & actions. We need to be extremely conscious about which desires to accept & which to neglect. If that discernment is not exercised then the same desires can drive us to madness, in doing things that can never be done otherwise

Bhagvad Gita explains cautions that when we contemplate a desirable sense object, that desire can gain such energy & momentum that it knocks over our intelligence and conscience, and finally knock us over. We then act mad, doing unconscionable things that we would normally never do

Don’t let mundane desires become our driving desires. Our desires should be dovetailed to higher spiritual desires
