Desire & Envy!

Vidura said to Dhritrāshtra- Sanat Kumāra is a great sage respected for his limitless knowledge, even by demigods. As the king became anxious to meet the sage, Vidura meditated & when the sage understood that he was being thought of, he instantly appeared

The sage was worshipped with great respect & after he was seated at ease, Vidura said: O son of Brahmā, there are grave thoughts withing Dhritrāshtra’s mind that I’m unable to remove. Hence, I humbly beg you to instruct him so that he becomes free from all fear

Dhritrāshtra, very happy to receive this chance of gaining absolute knowledge, inquired: O foremost of those who know truth, is there any end to life, or is death a transitory occurrence on the eternal path of existence?

Sage said: The self is eternal. However due to ignorance, when one becomes conditioned by material nature, he is subjected to changes of body as the result of his fruitive activities

King asked: Since the attainment of transcendental knowledge can award a person liberation from ignorance & bondage of Karma, why do learned persons perform religious rituals?

Sage said: Path of karma-yoga culminates in attainment of transcendental knowledge. When one thus comes to the platform of Gyāna-yoga, it is no longer needed to perform ritualistic activities mentioned in Vedas, although there are activities in relationship with the Supreme Soul, technically called Bhakti-Yoga. Thus, it is seen that those who are complete in knowledge engage in devotional service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krsna, knowing Him to be the Supreme absolute truth

Dhritrāshtra said: Does the Supreme Soul become conditioned & thus appear in this world in various species of life? Because it is said that the Supreme is all pervading, can we conclude that the universe full of living beings is a manifestation of His Lila(pastimes)?

Sage said: The conditioned living entities that we see in this material world are fragmental parts & parcels of the Supreme Lord. As such they are simultaneously one with & different from Him. They share His transcendental qualities, but He’s unlimited controller whereas they are tiny manifestations of His marginal energy

As long as conditioned souls covet the 4 material aspirations – Dharma, Artha, Kāma, Moksha- even the severest austerities cannot award him liberation. As long as one is covered by material desires, he must return to the field of fruitive activities, even after elevating himself to Brahmaloka. Therefore, human life is meant for controlling material urges & lack of such control is called madness

The entire night passed as Dhritrāshtra & Vidura conversed with Sanat-Kumāra

icchā-dveṣa-samutthena dvandva-mohena bhārata
sarva-bhūtāni sammohaṁ sarge yānti paran-tapa

O scion of Bharata, O conqueror of the foe, all living entities are born into delusion, bewildered by dualities arisen from desire and hate

Two kinds of propensities arise in the living entity. One propensity is icchā, which means desire to lord it over material nature or to be as great as the Supreme Lord. Everyone desires to be the greatest personality in this material world. Dveṣa means "envy." When one becomes envious of Kṛṣṇa, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one thinks, "Why should Kṛṣṇa be the all and all? I'm as good as Kṛṣṇa." These two items, desire to be the Lord and envy of the Lord, are the beginning cause of material bondage.
