Morality

Yudhisthira received Sanjaya well & inquired about Kurus at Hastināpur. Sanjay said: O King! I assure you that Dhritrāshtra sincerely desires that you & his sons live together peacefully. He is very sorry about all troubles you underwent due to his wicked son

Dhritrāshtra’s message to all of you is: I first prostrate myself before Lord Krsna & venerable king Drupada. I then implore all of you to act in such a way that peace may be established between yourselves & my sons. This is also Bhisma’s wish & so I hope that at all costs, a disastrous war may be averted

Yudhisthira said: It is our fervent wish that war is avoided & peace established. My brothers & I are never interested in selfishly enjoying happiness. We’re only concerned with performing our duty in accordance with tenets of virtue. One who eagerly follows dictations of his senses, hoping to become happy, actually ends up being forced to perform so many abominable actions that brings increased suffering. One who incessantly hankers after sense gratification inflicts pain upon his body, whereas one who forgoes such urges avoids innumerable miseries

Unfortunately, Dhritrāshtra always gave up virtuous path, being misled by his self-interested son. He invariably neglected Vidura’s good advice in favor of pampering Duryodhana, who is ambitious, malicious, envious, wrathful, harsh speaking, ever absorbed in sensuality, inclined to transgress moral laws & always vicious, stubborn & extremely proud

My dear Sanjaya: I’m willing to accept a peaceful settlement, but only if Indraprastha is returned to me

Sanjay said: Dear Yudhisthira! You must avoid fighting with Kauravas at all costs. It would be better for you to live by begging in the kingdom of Vrsnis than to allow yourself to be driven by greed & fight for your kingdom. As you well know, highest virtue is to give up material desires altogether. Do not give way to wrath, after having lived a lifetime of strict moral behavior. If you think of regaining your kingdom by force, why didn’t you do so at the time of gambling match, when all kings were your allies?

Since that time, Kauravas have greatly increased in strength, whereas your strength has diminished. Thus, it would be most inappropriate time for you to fight. Even if you were to emerge victorious, which is certainly doubtful, what happiness could you derive after killing Bhisma, Drona, Krpa & others. You’re by nature very compassionate & forgiving. If you’re preparing to fight, simply because your allies urge you to do so, it would be better for you to run away, leaving them aside

Maharāj Yudhisthira said: It appears highly doubtful that you know the true meaning of virtue. Of course, understanding of righteousness is very subtle because morality is variously conceived according to one’s occupation. Furthermore in times of distress or emergency, that which is normally immoral may be highly virtuous

What is actual morality. When there is war, to kill enemies is morality. But in peaceful condition killing a person it is sinful. Morality or immorality, the process is the same So how it will be standardized?

Bhāgavata says dharmaṁ tu sākṣād bhagavat-praṇītam

Real dharma, real religion, morality, honesty, can only be decided on the words of the Supreme Lord. When Kṛṣṇa says "This is all right," then it is all right. When Kṛṣṇa says it is not right, then it is not right

Kṛṣṇa is the greatest authority. Just like state says: Now it is wartime! If you kill a no. of enemies then you will be awarded with gold medal. The same process of killing. But at another time, when there is no war, if you kill one person you'll be hanged. The killing process is same, but judgement is given by the greatest authority, the government

Standard of morality means to abide by the orders of the greatest authority
