Lust!

Salya narrated story as follows: After Indra killed 3-headed Visvarupa, great sage Tvastr caused a gigantic demon named Vrtra to emerge from his sacrificial fire. At last Indra was able to kill Vrtrāsura (a Brāhmanā) with his thunderbolt, but instead of feeling delight, he became morose due to being afflicted with sinful reaction of killing a Brāhmanā

After being pursued by Sin personified, Indra at last took shelter within the waters of Mānasa-sarovar. Overpowered by influence of sinful reaction for killing Brāhmanā, Indra remained unrecognized & almost bereft of all prowess. In his absence life on earth became chaotic. Due to lack of rainfall, rivers & lakes dried up and as earth’s vegetation withered, men & animals were in extreme distress

Demigods & sages approached Nāhusa, who refused their request. With self-interest in mind he said: I’m not powerful enough to act as protector of entire universe & would be vanquished in no time. Sages assured him that they’d empower him with strength of their austerities so that not only he would be able to rule without any impediment but would absorb prowess of whoever came before him. Nāhusa agreed & was bestowed as the King of Heaven

Although Nāhusa had lived virtuously on earth, after being awarded Supreme post in heaven, his mind turned towards sensuality. He always kept himself surrounded by Apsarās, enjoying their company within heavenly gardens with musical & other forms of entertainment

One day Nāhusa happened to see Indra’s favorite queen Saci. Being very appreciative of her beauty, Nāhusa turned to his servants & said: Why should this most lovely lady not wait upon me, like others? After all I’m now king of heaven! Go & bring her to me after I return to my palace

When Saci learned of Nāhusa’s order, she fearfully went to Brihaspati & informed about evil intentions of the King. She implored: You’ve often described me as the most chaste women & have assured me that I would never become a widow. Pls ensure that your words may not prove false. Brihaspati said: I can assure that you have no need to fear Nāhusa & very soon you’ll be united with your husband

Meanwhile, when Nāhusa learned that Saci had taken shelter of Brihaspati, he became angry. Seeing this, demigods & sages pleaded: Pls give up your sinful intention of enjoying another’s wife. Due to your anger, all creatures of universe are afraid. But overwhelmed with lust, Nāhusa couldn’t appreciate this good advice. His end was near

Krsna says:

kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ
mahāśano mahā-pāpmā viddhy enam iha vairiṇam

It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born of contact with material mode of passion & later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world

When a living entity comes in contact with material creation, his eternal love for Kṛṣṇa is transformed into lust, in association with the mode of passion. When lust is unsatisfied, it turns into wrath, wrath is transformed into illusion, & illusion continues the material existence. Therefore, lust is the greatest enemy of living entity
