Intelligent choice!
After departure of
Drupada’s priest, Arjun decided to go to Dvārakā. By means of spies Duryodhana
learned of this & so quickly he left Hastināpur for the capital of Yādavas.
It so happened that both Arjun & Duryodhana arrived at Dvārakā on the same
day, although the Kaurav king was the first to enter Sri Krsna’s palace
Duryodhana saw that
Sri Krsna was sleeping & so he sat upon a very opulent chair he found
placed near the Lord’s head. Soon after, Arjun entered the room. After bowing
down to offer obeisances, he stood at Sri Krsna’s lotus feet with folded hands.
It so happened that when Lord Krsna awoke, His glance first fell upon Arjun
When He saw that
Duryodhana had also come to see Him, Sri Krsna enquired: O best of Bhāratas, I
hope that both of you are well. Now, please disclose the purpose of your coming
here to visit Me. Duryodhana quickly replied: My dear Krsna, I have come to
solicit your help in the impending war between us & the Pāndavās. Although,
You are equally related to both sides as our cousin, because I came first, You
should grant my request without hesitation
Sri Krsna replied:
My dear Duryodhana, there is no doubt that you were the first to enter My room,
but since I happened to see Arjun first upon waking, I will arrange to help both
of you. I have under My rule, one hundred million powerful cowherd warriors,
known as Nārayanas, who practically rival Me in strength. I will give these
soldiers to one side & personally assist the other side after vowing to never
take up a weapon during the battle. Since it is customary for juniors to be
given the first choice, I will let Arjun select either Me or My warriors
Without the
slightest hesitation, Arjuna happily chose Lord Krsna & in turn, Duryodhana
was very satisfied to receive the Nārayana warriors. Feeling that he had succeeded
in his mission, Duryodhana took permission from Sri Krsna & next went to
see Lord Balarāma
Sri Krsna says in
Bhagvad Gita:
ahaṁ sarvasya
prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate
iti matvā bhajante māṁ budhā bhāva-samanvitāḥ
I am the source of
all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who
perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all
their hearts
As human beings if
we serve the Supreme Lord with devotion, he can give us both spiritual &
material benefits. Choosing only material benefits away from Krsna, the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, is not intelligent as the same can be lost in due
course of time leaving us in delusion. We always see this fact manifesting an
we know what happened to Duryodhana
