Effective speech!
Everyone agreed with Sri Krsna’s approach. Lord Krsna & other Yadava’s then took permission from Virāta & departed for Dvāraka, while the Pāndavās began preparing for war. With the help of Drupada & Virāta, Pāndavās sent invitations to all kings of the world. Thus, within a short time, mighty rulers began pouring into Upaplavya from all corners of the globe
By means of spies, Kauravas learned of Pāndavās’ plans & they also began to collect the allies in the same way. Thus, the entire earth became crowded with warriors as they traversed its surface to join either Pāndavās or Kauravas
Meanwhile, Drupada sent his elderly & learned priest to Hastināpur as Pāndavās’ ambassador after instructing him how to deal with the Kurus in such a way that there would be the best chance for establishing peace. He advised the Brāhmanā to speak from the viewpoint of virtue so that with Vidura’s support, Bhisma Drona & Krpā might slacken in their staunch support of Duryodhana
Drupada considered that if dissension amongst the Kurus could be created, Duryodhana would have to spend all his time reconciling himself with his generals. As a result, Kaurav King would be unable to adequately prepare for war, while Pāndavās could amass their allies without impediment. He intelligently instructed priest how to sow seeds of sympathy for the Pāndavās within Kuru’s hearts, creating disunion amongst them
He then instructed: It may be possible that Dhritrāshtra will do as you say. You should speak to him from the standpoint of virtue. To those who are compassionate, you should speak about the hardships Pāndavās endured in the forest. To elderly persons, speak about the family traditions established since time immemorial
There is no need for you to fear, for you are a respectable elderly Brāhmanā acting as our emissary, said Virāta to his priest
The art of speech is required for all of us to be effective & to facilitate the issues at hand smoothly. We can persuade someone with this art to agree on something important. Two important elements of an effective speech are that it should be rational & also emotional. When we make a two-pronged approach depending upon who were are talking to, it shows positive results
Our speech should both be sensible & sensitive. We should not only push our way but should be considerate about other’s position. Krsna says in Bhagvad Gita
anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ ca yat
svādhyāyābhyasanaṁ caiva vāṅ-mayaṁ tapa ucyate
Austerity of speech consists in speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others, and also in regularly reciting Vedic literature
