Carry Him Along!

Duryodhana went to see Lord Balarāma, who was certainly favorably disposed towards him. In reply to Kaurav king’s request for help, Lord Balarāma said: At the time of Abhimanyu’s marriage, I had spoken highly about you, even to the extent of contradicting Krsna. Still, He did not accept My words. Please try to understand that I’m inseparable from Krsna. It is my eternal vow to never act against His Supreme will. After considering the matter carefully, I’ve firmly decided not to take part in the impending war

Duryodhana could understand Balarāma’s predicament. After embracing Him in great friendship, he departed for Krtavarmā’s palace. When this great Yadu hero promised his allegiance, along with one akshauhini of soldiers, Duryodhana was delighted

Meanwhile, after Duryodhana’s departure, Sri Krsna asked Arjun: O son of Kunti! Why did you choose Me instead of My powerful army since I will not even be able to fight?

Arjun replied: My Lord! I know that all prowess, fame & victory reside in You alone. Even if You do not fight, this opulence will follow You onto the battlefield, enabling me to come out victorious. It is my long-cherished desire that You become my chariot driver. Since You have agreed to personally assist me, kindly fulfill my wish

Sri Krsna agreed to drive Arjun’s chariot & then both left for Upaplavya. Meanwhile after receiving Maharāj Yudhisthira’s invitation, Salya, the king of Madras, set out to join Pāndavās, with his sons, as well as one akshauhini of soldiers. His army was so large that while camping at night, it would cover an area of more than 20 square kilometers

Duryodhana learned of Salya’s intention to join Pāndavās & so he cleverly had a rest camp constructed alongside the road upon which the king was travelling. This camp had a magnificent pavilion that was filled with all imaginable objects of enjoyment & was staffed with the most expert and extensive personnels. Duryodhana personally went there, but he remained hidden at the time of Salya’s arrival. His servants gave Salya a royal reception

The arrangements were so opulent that the king began to feel superior even to Indra. After being unstintingly lavished with food, drink & entertainment, Salya became extremely satisfied. Thinking that this had been provided by Yudhisthira, Salya called for servants & rewarded them to please his magnanimous host. After servants went & reported to Duryodhana, who then personally came & presented himself before his maternal uncle

When Salya saw that it was Duryodhana who had gone to so much trouble to receive him, he embraced his nephew & said: You have pleased me greatly by your gracious hospitality. Allow me to do something in return. Duryodhana happily said: Dear uncle! I want you to become the commander of my vast army. Salya immediately agreed

Bhagvad Gita ends with these words from Sanjaya

yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ
tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir dhruvā nītir matir mama

Wherever there is Kṛṣṇa, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and morality. That is my opinion

We just need to carry the Supreme Lord along & the victory at each & every step of our lives be ours
