Bite the bullet!
After the Brāhmanā
priest (envoy) spoke, Bhismā was the first to respond: O Kings! The ambassador
for Pāndavās has spoken to us in a very strong language. Still, it must be
admitted that the sons of Pāndu deserve their rightful share of Kuru kingdom.
It must also be considered that if peace is sought, we will avoid wholesale
destruction at the hands of Arjun’s superior prowess
Karna became very
angry listening to this talk. He turned to Duryodhana & arrogantly
interrupted Bhisma saying: You shouldn’t think that you’ve to return Pāndavās
kingdom out of fear. Why we should be intimidated by anyone? Of course, if Pāndavās
were to personally come here & humbly beg for it, I’m sure you would be
willing to give them some kind of kingdom to rule as subordinates
Bhisma angrily
retorted: O Suta’s son, have you already forgotten how Arjun single-handedly
defeated you, along with all other Kuru warriors? To pacify Bhisma, Dhritrāshtra
exclaimed: O Karna, what the grandsire says is correct!
Turning to the
envoy, Dhritrāshtra said: O Brāhmanā, I’ll carefully consider what should be
done. When a conclusion is reached, I’ll send Sanjaya as a messenger to Pāndavās.
In this way Dhritrāshtra dismissed Drupada’s priest. After the Brāhmanā left
the assembly, he called Sanjaya & said: I want you to go to Upaplavya &
speak to Pāndavās in such a way that they’ll become pacified
There is no one
more virtuous than Yudhisthira & I’ll never forget how he has been obedient
with me, even while ruling the entire earth as its emperor. Indeed, I can
truthfully say that after examining the Pāndavās qualities throughout their
lifetime, I’ve never been able to find even a single serious fault with them
My dear Sanjaya,
I’m sure that if they are appeased, war can be averted, for everyone loves the
Pāndavās, except my dull-headed son & wicked Karna. I want to avoid war at
all costs, because I know that with the help of Krsna, who is Lord Vishnu
incarnated upon the earth, the Pāndavās are invincible. I’m convinced that if
Krsna & Arjun ride to battle on the same chariot, all my sons will be
annihilated. Go now to Pāndavās & speak on my behalf, in favor of peace
Sanjaya was the son
of Gavalgana & a suta by caste. Taking Dhritrāshtra instructions on his
head, he departed at once for Upaplavya. Upon arriving, he was greeted by Pāndavās
& in turn informed Maharāj Yudhisthira of how Dhritrāshtra inquired about
his welfare
Lip service does
not help at all. We, despite knowing the truth, turn a blind eye towards
reality then it is a recipe for disaster, which will soon strike. Here Dhritrāshtra,
despite knowing the unacceptable behavior of his sons, still expects that the
situations will improve by sugar coating the faults of his sons & expecting
others to follow Dharma
We need to bite the
bullet and call spade a spade, despite our utmost attachment to people or
things. Not doing so invites doom, for which we ourselves are responsible for
