Spiritualize & become fearless!

 

As celestial weapons appeared before Arjun to render service, he bowed & requested them to always dwell in his memory. Arjun strung his bow & when he twanged it, entire sky became filled with dreadful vibration. When Kauravas heard this sound, they became convinced without doubt that the unknown warrior was Arjun only

 

Uttara hesitatingly said as they departed: I’ve full confidence in your ability but I’m afraid that we have to face many unconquerable warriors. Arjun laughed & said: Just remember how I fought against Gandharvās, demigods & demons when Agni devoured Khāndava forest. I defeated all great warriors who opposed me at Draupadi’s Swayamvara. Now hoist the flag of Hanumān upon staff & let us set out without delay

 

When Arjun blew his mighty conch shell, tumultuous sound made the horses fall to their knees. Uttara became stunned with fear & sat down dumbfounded. Arjun picked up reins & after making horses stand up, he embraced Uttara saying: Calm yourself, there is no reason to be afraid. As a warrior you must have heard sounds of many powerful conch shells. Why are you stunned this time?

 

Uttara said: Dear Arjun! The combined sound of the twang of your Gāndiva bow, the blowing of Devdutta conch shell & roaring of ferocious creatures sitting on your flagstaff bewildered my mind

 

Arjun replied: Plant your feet firmly on chariot floor & hold reins tightly, for I am to blow my conch shell once more

 

When the mighty Devdutta was sounded again, mountain peaks split in half & Uttara jumped out of his seat. As the prince fearfully clung to the chariot’s railings, Arjun comforted him once more

 

We all are afraid of losing wealth, health & loved ones. To deal with such fears we make different arrangements but rarely make attempt to address root cause of such fear, which is the absence of God. We either think that the Supreme Lord doesn’t exist or doesn’t care or doesn’t have control

 

We think that we are on our own and if we cannot control things, we will perish. But in fact, so much that matters to us is beyond our control. Our simultaneous need to control & inability to control causes an existential angst that lies at the root of our fears

 

Krsna says in Bhagvad Gita:

abhayaṁ sattva-saṁśuddhir jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ
dānaṁ damaś ca yajñaś ca svādhyāyas tapa ārjavam

 

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Fearlessness; purification of one’s existence; cultivation of spiritual knowledge; charity; self-control; performance of sacrifice; study of the Vedas; austerity; simplicity……belong to godly men endowed with divine nature

 

When we serve God with devotion, it tunes our awareness to his universal presence & thus our consciousness becomes spiritualized. We then understand there is eternal reality beyond mundane reality (source of our fears). We realize that we belong to the same supreme reality & thus are indestructible spiritual beings, part & parcel of Supreme Lord

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made. Duryodhana flattered Salya by comparing him to Lord Brahmā, who formerly became Shiva’s charioteer at the time of destroying Tripura   Duryodhana concluded his long talk by saying: Dear Salya, Parasurāma delivered the entire science of weapons to Karna. Grudge-The heaviest thing to hold! Asvattāma hurriedly yoked horses to his chariot & set out, as Krpa & Krtvarma anxiously followed him. He soon arrived at Pāndava camp & saw a gigantic being with enormous head with flames emanating from his eyes, nose, ear & mouth   Asvattāma fearlessly attacked that awesome being with his celestial weapons but failed in all his attempt. He thought to himself: Krpa had warned me that persons who don’t listen to their elders must lament later. The frustration of my attempt must be due to its inherently sinful nature.
