Principles to fight & die for!

Arjun had Uttara halt his chariot at some distance from Kaurav army to survey the opposition. He thought that if he could simply vanquish Duryodhana, other Kauravas would automatically desist. But he noted that Duryodhana was absent. Arjun ordered Uttara: Avoiding the Kaurav army, take the road to Hastināpur so that we can overtake Duryodhana and retrieve the plundered cows

 

From Arjun’s course, Krpā could understand his intention & so he had ordered the entire Kaurav army to go & protect Duryodhana. Meanwhile as Arjun approached the army, he covered the entire sky with his showers of arrows so that Kaurav soldiers were thrown into confusion

 

Taking advantage of this, Arjun ordered the creatures on his flagpole to roar more loudly while he twanged his bow & blew his conch shell, causing the earth to tremble. At this time the Kaurav army was stunned with fear & so Arjun took the opportunity to make the cows turn back towards Virāta’s capital. Accomplishing this, Arjun rushed to encounter Duryodhana, who was now assisted by other great Kuru heroes

 

Arjun ordered Uttara to first take him to Karna. Seeing this, many warriors came to oppose him & Vikarna was first to attack Arjun, but he soon fled after his bowstring & flagpole were cut to pieces. Arjun then created a great slaughter amongst Kuru army & killed Karna’s younger brother Sangrāmajit. Enraged Karna rushed at Arjun & released ceaseless showers of arrows. Arjun was so highly inflamed with rage that he appeared like a lion that had been rudely awakened from slumber

 

Indeed, Arjun pierced every part of Karna’s body so forcibly that he had to flee the battlefield out of fear of his life

 

Other Kuru heroes attacked Arjun but were soon afflicted by the torrent of arrows. In fact, Arjun threw the entire Kaurav army into confusion & whoever came close to him was immediately dispatched to the abode of Yamarāja. All were astonished to witness Arjun’s unprecedented prowess

 

Karna returned but Arjun pierced him in the ear & then killed his horses & driver. With Karna out of the way, Arjun next decided to display his skill before Krpā. He asked Uttara: First go & circumambulate Krpācharya’s with our chariot. Only if he attacks me first will I fight with him. We will approach Bhishma only after all others have been vanquished, for he will surely be the greatest obstacle on our path to victory

We fight not against a person but against what one represents. The principles to fight should not be based on our craving of emotions running contrary against someone but should be based on timeless wisdom. We need to keep us away from the unwanted emotions turning us provocative due to external situations. We should be tolerant seeking to understand the unwanted emotions & by doing so find their causes & work on the cures
