Be Aware!
As Drona noticed inauspicious signs & said to Duryodhana: O King! Just see crows perched on top of our flagstaff. Our weapons have lost their luster & horses are making frightful sounds. Indeed, entire earth appears to be trembling and so, with certainty we can expect to meet with destruction at the hands of Pāndavās. Still, let us send cows ahead & then array our forces in preparation of the impending battle
Duryodhana said: O Brāhmana, the 13th year has not yet come to an end. If this is really Arjun, then Pāndavās will have to undergo another term of exile in forest. Being doubtful however, Duryodhana turned to Bhishma & said: Pls calculate exactly when Pāndavās year of living incognito will come to end. He again said to Drona: I don’t think it is Pāndavās attacking us. After all, they’re supposed to get back their kingdom peacefully at the end of their 13th year of exile. It must be Matsyas who’ve come to retrieve their cows
Duryodhana was irritated as Bhishma & Drona seemed reluctant to fight. Karna spoke to cheer him up: There is no use listening to what Drona said, for he is partial towards Arjun. Truthfully, I think he has been planted within our midst by Pāndavās. This would explain why he always exaggerates while praising them. I think that Drona has described these so-called evil omens to scare us
Dear King! Pls consider things rationally. Does the wind not always blow? Is it unnatural for the clouds to sound with thunder? What do these natural phenomenon have to do with the arrival of the Pāndavās? Rest assured that I’ll fulfill my vow by easily vanquishing Arjun especially since he must become emaciated due to harsh forest life
Actually, what is the need for anyone else to fight? Let rest of you take Virātas’s cows, as Drona suggests. Or if you like, you can remain here to witness my prowess in battle, said Karna
Krpā couldn’t bear to hear these boastful words & so he retaliated by saying: O Karna, perhaps you’ve forgotten Arjun’s heroic accomplishments. Otherwise, how could you foolishly claim that you’ll defeat him? Such a statement is just like that of a man who has bound himself hand & foot, tied to a stone around his neck declaring: I’ll swim across the ocean
All of us together-You, me, Bhishma, Drona, Duryodhana & Asvattāma, may be able to contend with Arjun, but it is madness for you to proclaim that you can fight with him alone
To please someone, one can go to any length in servitude and present to him a picture entirely different than reality. This takes the person away from actuality and is a great disservice. We should be very careful with the association of such people. They may boost our false ego from outside but in fact they make us weak from inside, shielding us to justice even to the strength we have and how it should be used
Don’t let false hope make you stupid!
