Actions & Emotions!
Indra blessed his son Arjun from above. Sounding his conch shell, Arjun caused tumultuous sound that went all the way to heavens & reverberated back to earth. Krpā could not tolerate this sound & angrily blew his conch shell
Picking up his bow, Krpā pierced Arjun with 10 arrows. Thereafter, both mighty bowmen unleashed unending showers of arrows. At last Arjun pierced Krpā’s horses so sharply that they reared up dislodging him from his seat. Arjun desisted from fighting, out of respect for his former teacher, but after a moment Krpā recovered & a fierce duel resumed
Arjun managed to break Krpā’s bow & sever his armor, which fell from his body. Krpā angrily picked up another bow but once again Arjun broke it. Again & again Krpā picked new bows, but Arjun broke them to pieces. Finally, when no more bows remained, Krpā picked a spear & hurled it. As spear came streaking towards him like blazing meteor, Arjun deftly cut it into pieces. He then cut-off the head of Krpā’s driver & his flagpole and smiling derisively pierced Krpā in chest with a powerful arrow
Without his charioteer, Krpā jumped to ground & as a last resort, picked up his mace & hurled it at Arjun. Arjun performed a remarkable feat by deflecting the mace back towards Krpā, who then left battlefield
Next Drona rushed impetuously at Arjun, blowing his mighty conch shell. Arjun confronted Drona & said: O Guru! Since our period of exile is over, we are very eager to avenge wrongs inflicted upon us. Still, I’ll not attack you unless you discharge first arrow. In response Drona released 20 arrows but Arjun cut them all. Marveling at Arjun, Drona displayed skillful use of weapons. Seeing this other warriors said: Even a disciple may sometimes have to fight with his guru!
The arrows shot by Drona practically touched each other, tip to tail, as they flew thro’ air & appeared to be one continuous line. Because of their feathers, they looked like birds flying south during autumn. Arjun counteracted & entire sky was filled with arrows
Soon Arjun released thousands of arrows completely covering Drona’s chariot & then severed his armor. Asvattāma came to protect his father but soon lost steam when his arrows were exhausted. Arjun possessed inexhaustible quivers but desisted from further combat
Our emotions often interfere with our purposes. They break our resolve or force us to do something else. We need to shift focus from our emotions to our actions. To practically manage this, we need to be observer of our emotion-how they arrive & depart nonjudgmentally. Even if we are not able to control our emotions, it doesn’t mean that we can’t control our actions, which is very much in our hands
If we keep our actions purposefully driven our emotions will also gradually change. Purpose-driven actions become easier when we connect with a higher power, the Supreme omnipotent Lord Krsna. Practicing Bhakti yoga empowers us to transcend & transform our emotions
