Transformation!
As Surya didn’t
relent, Kunti thought: How can I save myself from horrible disgrace of having a
child before marriage? How can I save my father & Durvāsa Muni from
terrible curse of Sun-God? Stunned she remained silent for long time, unable to
decide what to do
Finally, in a voice
laden with bashfulness she requested: O Sun-God, I’m very afraid of performing
a sinful act that will degrade reputation of my family. Pls somehow enable me
to remain a chaste virgin, despite my connection with you. If you’re able to do
that, considering our union to be virtuous, I’ll submit to you
Surya said: It is
the nature of virgin girls to desire any man she sees & thus she has been
given the name Kanya: derived from root word Kāma. As you’re very fearful, I’ll
enable you to remain a virgin & you can be rest assured that the child born
from our union will become highly illustrious within this world
Kunti knew that
there was no turning back & so she further requested: O lord! May the son
born to me have natural earrings & impenetrable armor and possesses incomparable
strength. Surya consented & said: Aditi has given me these natural
ornaments produced from celestial nectar. Kunti then agreed to accept Sun God’s
embraces. Surya fixed his mind in trance & then entered Kunti’s body
subtly, placing within her womb a portion of his own self. He then departed
Because Kunti lived
in an inner apartment of the palace, where women were only allowed, she was
able to conceal her pregnancy from others, confiding only to her personal
maidservant. In due course of time, she gave birth to a boy adorned with
dazzling natural armor & earrings. She then reluctantly put the baby into a
wicker basket & placed auspicious articles meant for his protection
Kunti then left the
palace in the middle of the night with her maidservant & went to Asva River.
With tears in her eyes, she placed the basket on the water. After setting it
adrift, she broke down & cried bitterly while offering her blessings for
child’s welfare. She prayed to demigods for her baby’s protection & thought
that some fortunate woman would hopefully be able to adopt him
Kunti returned home
as the basket continued to drift on & on, downstream in the river. Tears
were incessantly flowing
We shed tears of
repentance after a terrible mistake or act in an immoral way. These tears can
clean & heal,
but not always. If tears arise primarily due to distress
arising out consequences of our actions
such as destruction of reputation, wealth etc. then those tears may
well be due to our ego.
The tears may
be genuine, but they won’t
lead to a genuine transformation. This is because we are not desiring inner
transformation of our character,
but only outer transformation of consequences
We need to
recognize why that act is intrinsically wrong & not just extrinsically incorrect
due to consequences. Fear of consequences can strongly deter us from
nonchalantly repeating those actions. But if we feel that we can be smart
enough to do those actions again without bearing consequences, then we will
re-indulge
Understanding that
we are spiritual being, part & parcel of Supreme Lord, then we will not
only do better things but can become better beings
