Boss!
Maharāj Yudhisthira called all those who accompanied him & said: My dear sage Dhaumya! You should take everyone to the Pāncāla kingdom & remain there during next year. The only exception will be Indrasena & other drivers. They should take our chariots to Dvāraka & remain under the care of Yadavas. When questioned, all of you must say: We have no idea where the Pāndavās have gone
Dhaumya, please instruct me as to how I can pass through the coming year with least difficulty, asked Yudhisthira
Dhaumya said: O King! I approve of the arrangements you made for remaining incognito, but you must take special care to always protect Draupadi. Please note that as you’re going to Virāta & live there, it is very difficult to live with a king. One who does so must strictly act according to the prescribed etiquette, to avoid incurring King’s displeasure. Kings are very sensitive regarding their unrivalled position
Anyone who threatens their supremacy & dignity is never forgiven, even if he happens to be the King’s brother. For this reason, one should never dare advise a king unless he is requested to do so. Instead, one should constantly endeavor to win the king’s good graces by means of pleasing speech & frequent praises
One should never display superior abilities in front of a king, even if it is done without pride. One should never try to force the king to act in a particular way, just to suit one’s whims. Instead, one should always follow the king, just like a shadow. A person must never anger the king by disclosing royal secrets. Whatever clothing or paraphernalia one receives from the king as a gift must be kept carefully and used with great respect
Maharāj Yudhisthira praised Dhaumya for his good advice. Then he requested the sage to perform auspicious rituals in preparation for their departure for the Matsya kingdom
Thereafter, Pāndavās set out for a long journey and passing many kingdoms, they finally reached the outskirts of Virāta’s city
To deal with a Superior is an art and involves much intelligence. Here the elements to deal with the boss is beautifully explained by Sage Dhaumya. In our professional lives, we miss this important point of diplomacy to make the boss look good in most situations.
This does not mean that one should make the Superior look good and follow his instructions, even he is doing things detrimental to the team and the company as a whole. Voice should be raised but in a proper forum, time, circumstances & people. Otherwise, one can lose his position in the process, thereby losing the chance to make a change
It’s more important to deliver on your responsibilities first and then point fingers at others (Infact not pointing is a better option)
Empower your boss, choose your battles wisely, find common working ground & stay away from politics and gossip
