How one falls!

One day Pāndavās went to search for food in forest, leaving Draupadi alone at home. At that time, King of Sindhudesa Jayadratha, happened to pass thro’ Kāmyaka forest. He was on way to visit King Sālva with hope to marry his daughter & thus was dressed in the best royal fashion

When Jayadratha saw Pāndavās cottage, he stopped & as he came closer he saw Draupadi standing in the doorway. Whoever happened to see Draupadi considered her like a goddess & so members of hiss entourage folded their hands in reverence. He however was overwhelmed by lust after seeing Draupadi’s splendorous beauty, which seemed to illuminate surroundings & evil intentions entered his mind

Addressing his companion, Prince Kotika, he said: If I could have this beautiful woman there would be no need for any other marriage. I want to take her back to my kingdom right away. Go & find out who she is & name of her husband

Kotika approached Draupadi like jackal approaches lioness. He introduced himself & Jayadratha. In response to his enquiries, Draupadi said: It is considered improper for a woman to speak directly with any man other than her husband. However, Since I’m alone, I’ll answer your questions. I am daughter of King Drupada & my name is Krsnā. My 5 husbands are sons of Pāndu & they are not present here as they have gone out to hunt. You can wait awhile till they return

After saying this Draupadi entered cottage & Kotika went back to tell what he heard. Jayadratha said: I’m captivated by Draupadi’s exquisite beauty & now other women appear beautiful to me. Understanding his friends intention, wicked Kotika suggested to take Draupadi by force to his kingdom, as no one is here to stop them

Desperate due to onslaught of Cupid’s arrows, Jayadratha entered cottage like a wolf enters den of a lion. Coming before Draupadi, he enquired about her welfare. She politely responded & gave him water to wash his feet. Thanking her, Jayadratha said: O beautiful lady! Pls get on to my chariot, accept me as your husband & enjoy life with royal opulence. An intelligent woman will follow her husband in prosperity but rejects him if he falls into adversity. Just see what a miserable life you are living in forest. Use your intelligence & come with me

Draupadi was shocked to hear this & her face became red with rage

Krsna says:

dhyāyato viṣayān puṁsaḥ saṅgas teṣūpajāyate

saṅgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ kāmāt krodho ’bhijāyate

While contemplating objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, & from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises

One who is not Kṛṣṇa conscious is subjected to material desires while contemplating objects of senses. A sincere devotee of Lord shuns all material sense enjoyment due to his higher taste for spiritual enjoyment in association of Lord. One who is not is sure ultimately to fail, for the slightest thought of sense pleasure will agitate him to gratify his desires & this leads to his downfall
