Meanwhile,
Duryodhana received news of how Pāndavās have moved to Kāmyakavana. One day
Durvāsa Muni came to Hastināpur accompanied by 10 000 disciples. Duryodhana
& his brothers welcomed the sage with great respect & humility &
attended to his every need as if they were menial servants
Muni continued to
reside at Duryodhana’s palace for several days. He tested the service attitude of
Duryodhana by his varied demands & eccentric behavior. But Duryodhana did
not become angry or even annoyed. The Muni was pleased & said: I will give
you a benediction, provided it is not opposed to the principles of religion
Duryodhana had been
waiting for this opportunity & had already decided what benediction he
would ask in consultation with Karna, Sakuni & Duhsasana. He replied: O
best of sages, as you may know Maharāj Yudhisthira is now living in forest
along with his brothers. I wish that you & your disciples would pay him a
visit just at the time when Draupadi has finished eating & everyone has
laid down to rest
Durvāsa gave
consent & after his departure, Duryodhana & Karna were ecstatic,
thinking they had successfully plunged Pāndavās into an ocean of danger because
of sage’s impending anger, in case he was not fed & served well
If we use our
benediction to take revenge on others, what a terrible waste of it. Our skills
& blessings should always be used for a higher purpose of helping, creating
harmony & bringing smiles to others. It should never be used for even
slight harm, let alone even thinking negative about others. What we face &
what others do are all outcomes of one’s actions, either present or past. We
are responsible for correcting the self & contribute and not retribute.
This all starts with genuine humility
Krsna says:
amānitvam
adambhitvam ahiṁsā kṣāntir ārjavam
Humility;
pridelessness; nonviolence; tolerance; simplicity are few elements I declare to
be knowledge, and besides this whatever there may be is ignorance
Humility means that
one should not be anxious to have satisfaction of being honored by others. The
material conception of life makes us very eager to receive honor from others,
but from the point of view of a man in perfect knowledge – who knows that he is
not this body – anything, honor or dishonor, pertaining to this body is useless
One should not be
hankering after this material deception. People are very anxious to be famous
for their religion, and consequently sometimes it is found that without
understanding principles of religion one enters into some group which is not
actually following religious principles and then wants to advertise himself as
a religious mentor. As for actual advancement in spiritual science, one should
have a test to see how far he is progressing. He can judge by these items
