Respect!


Sage Mārkandeya continued his narrations about different topics with Pāndavās


In between Satyabhāma entered the cottage with Draupadi & began to converse with great pleasure. She inquired: Dear Princess! how’re you able to keep your husbands so submissive & obedient to you? I see that Pāndavās are always ready to please you & never become angry


Do you control them by mystic incantation or it is good result of all your austerities? Or is it just by your youthful beauty & artistic use of dress and cosmetics that you manage to keep your husbands under your sway? I ask this as I desire to keep my Lord Krsna under control in the same way. Pls tell the secret


Draupadi felt little offended by Satyabhama’s words. With a bit of indignation, she said: These’re methods of wicked women & men can never be made truly obedient by such means. My secret is simple: I’ve given up false pride & personal desires for sense gratification. I carefully control my anger & always serve my husbands with great care & devotion. Indeed, I restrain my senses so carefully that I don’t allow even a glance to betray slightest bit of emotion


I never think of eating or sleeping until my husbands & servants have done so. I’m ready to personally greet my husbands when they return home at any hour. I endeavor to do that which is agreeable to them without lethargy. I always serve my superiors & never speak of them disrespectfully. Most of all, I serve my mother-in-law Kunti, with utmost respect & attention


At Indraprastha, King Yudhisthira fed 1000’s of Brāhmanās daily & it was my duty to see that their needs were met. I had 100,000 maid servants to assist me & I knew names, faces & capabilities of each of them. Besides them, I also knew all male servants & even cowherds. Infact, I alone kept track of my husband’s daily income & expenditure, & know their total wealth. It is because I accepted this great burden of responsibility, I’ve won respect of my husbands


Satyabhāma said: Dear Draupadi! Pls forgive me for even suggesting that you might have controlled your husbands by some duplicitous methods


Draupadi said: A woman can captivate mind of her husband, drawing it away from anyone else, in a way that is devoid of deceit. To do so a wife must first consider her husband to be her god. After all, it is he alone who can fulfill her desires for children, clothing & all things necessary for a comfortable & enjoyable life. By always adoring her husband & promptly serving him with whatever he requires, a wife makes him feel that she really loves him


Be it Husband-wife or any relationship at home or at work, the respect is always earned & not forced upon. Our foremost responsibility should be to serve with love & not expect anything in return


Freedom comes not by rejecting all restrictions but by respecting the right restrictions. If we are bound by restrictions of our responsibilities & deliver them well, then we gain true respect of heart from others

  Make or break!   When Salya agreed to drive Karna’s chariot only on condition that he must be allowed to speak freely whatever he likes, Duryodhana and Karna readily agreed & thus a contract was made. Duryodhana flattered Salya by comparing him to Lord Brahmā, who formerly became Shiva’s charioteer at the time of destroying Tripura   Duryodhana concluded his long talk by saying: Dear Salya, Parasurāma delivered the entire science of weapons to Karna.   Krsna’s plan!   As Asvattāma asked Krpa about what happened to his father Drona, with great anguish Krpa said: My dear Asvattāma, your father was killed by Dhrishtadyumna. Knowing Drona to be invincible as long as he would wield his weapons, Sri Krsna ordered Yudhisthira to falsely inform him of your death. When your father heard this shocking news, he put down his weapons. Seeing this Dhrishta rushed at him brandishing his sword.
